when you said that the upgrades should be researched on each unit, you mean you research an upgrade and then the units have to buy the upgrades individually... that's been done in other rts games and it worked great, but we'd have to drastically redesign the cost/build times to make it stay fair
i was thinking (pardon this for being ridiculously difficult) that the buildings could be assembled by some kind of magnetic/nanyte type thing...
i realize nanytes aren't junky, so here's what i'm proposing.
what if everytime you collect a certain amount of resources with your workers, you get scrap drones from the barracks (same way you get larva, only it's based on income) and they fall apart after a certain amount of time if unused. however, you can build structures with these scrap bots by having them link together magnetically and shape into buildings. sounds good? that would separate the workers from the actual build force, making it a more unique race
