Yes, the exporter supports animations now and has for quite a while now. So yeah, animating in 3ds max and then exporting the M3 files and importing it into the editor would work.
Though, the easiest way I can think of animating it would be grabbing the ghost bones, save just the bones and then open the nova model and merge it with the ghost's bones. Sure you'll have to make some changes to the nova model but will save you quite some time on animating it yourself.
