I know that feeling. I'd recommend giving Black or White a try - it's what I started with after a long time of not playing any and I found it really refreshing and new - and I have to add I wasn't the least bit bothered by the new pokémon. It plays perfectly.
@Mozared: Go I've seen my cousin play those and I won't. the ones with Zekram and Reshiram, that merge into something else, right?
Zekrom, but yes and no. I don't recall them doing any merging or anything of the like, but they are the Black and White mascottes and do appear in the games. What you play is up to you, but if my opinion's anything to you I'll say that the story in B&W isn't very childish at all.
Also I grew tired of the same childish plots over and over. I understand it couldn't be any different, but it doesn't work for me anymore. I can't go "catch them all" and still feel the same when I catch a "rare" pokemon when they create 3 or more lengedaries every new game.
The story in Pokémon Black/White is actually very mature and funnily enough one of the more interesting game-stories I've ever witnessed. Try it, you'd be surprised. At the same time, I also like the new pokémon, usually. A lot of them seem a bit staple and boring, but occasionally there's the odd interesting new concept in there. It's a preference thing, but I also love exploring what kind of new and crazy Pokémon they came up with every new game and working out what team I want to set up along with that.
I haven't played in a while, but in 2011-2012 I completed a bunch of Pokémon games, namely the ones I hadn't played when I was younger. I think the ones I went through were Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, Heart Gold, Black and White. Black twice and White one and a half times.
Black and White are easily my favourites as they are simply such good sequals to all games before them. The concept of Red and Blue was simple and nice, but every consecutive game added one or more cool mechanics to the game - this has culminated in Black and White as the latest versions. Duo-battles, wiggling grass with special pokémon, the item finder, running boots... you name it. Also explains why I've effectively played that tier of Pokémon through more than thrice whereas I've only done every other tier once, maybe twice.
I'm looking forward to the release of the newest games. I believe they were called Pokémon X and Y. It can literally only get better if it's like Black and White with improvements. I've grown a bit tired with the older ones and can't put myself to playing anything older than Platinum, but I'd definitely re-play something that has all the features of Black/White in a seperate world.
