Some while ago i discovered the awesome game called "Mount and Blade: Warband".
Actually it is some years old already, but i never heard of it before - after i first found and played it, i was kinda ashamed of not knowing about such an nice game.
Explaination:
For everyone that does not know what mount and blade is, it is kind of an strategic action rpg in the medival timelines.
strategic because one part of it plays on an world map with several towns, villages and castles - another part of it plays as a 3rd/first person "shooter" (with sword, bow, crossbow etc.) on different battlefields based on the terrain you are currently walking on.
you create your main character with that you fight in these battles - you can level him, he has several attributes and skills and an rpg like inventory.
also you can set up an army - you can recruit volunteers in villages, find mercenaries in taverns or find companions all over the world, that provide an own set of skills, leveling and inventory.
there are several kingdoms battleing against each other for different reasons, diplomacy, truces and trading.
The Idea:
to bring this kind of game to StarCraft2 as a 3 Factions á 4 players multiplayer game.
many things would have to be changed, one thing would be the time factor due to multiplayer games that shouldnt last days or weeks (obviously)
probably you will be able to create an character once, and carry him along with you into other games, plus inventory & army - but that could also be an seperate game mode. (you wouldnt keep all your army, just x number in the specified slots for it)
it would look basically like this..
- terrain -> occupied by Terran, Protoss and ZErg towns/castles/villages divided into like 3 areas or 4 areas with one area being neutral between the others.
- you create your character and choose from a specified skillset (like in the game it was nobleman, hunter, melee warrior - all giving you beneficial stuff into some skills)
- you start for the faction you have choosen in the lobby (might be an issue due to "join and game starts if full" shit..)
- you start with an vulture as "horse" (sure we`ll stay in the sc2 universe) and move around, check a town and its tavern, check an village for volunteers etc. and build up an army, check for quests or item vendors or just trade some supplies between towns to make money
the time will pass "realtime" so after 7 days you have to pay for your army, always keep food for them and stuff like that.
then you'll start to capture towns and castles with your armies (but they all would have some garrison by default, npc´s)
if you meet an enemy, attack an village or something that initiates an battle, you will go to the battle area (several spaces that you cant see if you´re on the worldmap) and start your battle there.
point of the game would be for an force to dominate the worldmap and capture everything while building up an big army, trading to increase their wealth and do quests to increase the level.
well so - what do you guys think? ideas? feedback?
this is at the moment just an idea, but if people like it i would start working on it - with or without help if someone might be interested.
Reminds me of Suikoden. Sounds like a good idea on paper, and I think it could be a neat game if implemented well.
Custom models to make it medieval would be nice, but I understand that's too much of a workload for a one-person project, if that's what it's going to be.
