Minecraft took nearly a year for notch to program and it's pretty simple and to the point. It made me wonder, how harder would it be to create an indie RPG? Not saying I am going to try and make one, at least yet, about the only thing I can make is a 'for loop' loop around a statement 1000+ times showing the multiplication and division tables!
I was just curious if it would be any harder at all or if it would take the same amount of time.
Speaking of indie games, what's your favorite indie game? Personally I liked Minecraft but Super Meat Boy was amazing.

World of Goo. :)
If you wonder how much time and effort it takes to create an indie game, I'm really well-placed to tell you. We were a team of 5 guys, it took a whole year to create an indie game on Wii (it was in the first year the console came out). Well, to be more specific it took 20+ weeks, which means 100 days + a few weekends of brainstorming, debugging, plannings, etc...
Note that we had jobs aside from this project though, so we couldn't spend each day on it. It was meant to be our graduation project, to become game/level designers (depends who, but I personally always aimed at becoming a level designer so I made the whole level). It was not a RPG game at all so I assume you could multiply by 3 (at least) the time necessary to create a RPG with a team of 5 guys. Multiply this by 2-3 again if no one in the team have had any experience in the games industry.
Wargames, fighting games and RPGs are the hardest types of games to create IMO, because they require many elements which all interact together. Any bug in these games is a pain, because it ruins the gameplay pretty fast... But hopefully, if you try to make a RPG you'll have a whole team of at least 20 guys helping, and if you trust them enough you know they'll do their part, and they'll do it well.
There are development kits, just like any console. Nintendo kits are a bit more complicated to get (it's a matter of policy between Nintendo and the game developers), but it's pretty much the same as for any console.
I almost forgot to tell about Braid and Osmos... These 2 games are good. Braid is really hard to finish, Osmos is pretty much the contrary but it's really cool anyway. Beat Hazard (available on Steam) is also kind of fun (if you don't fear having seizures and burning your eyes)... There is also a flash game I like (actually, 2... though they're not really indie games) which is named This Is The Only Level.

Indie games > All other games but Blizzard games :). But yeah, it took me a month to program a Os and Xs game in ICT xD
Personally, I love Yet Another Zombie Defense. Miner Dig Deep (or whatever its called) was an honorable mention.

Indie game are amazing, though it was really hard work, just like modding.
