ps. to the moderator guy. I'm very respectful to moderators because i have been banned several times in many forums for making the admins sad. And i like this forum very much and not gonna swear. But my post suggested this will be done in the future. I also think you are a very nice guy and you don't have to get mad for things like this. So if you would send me a private message with some link to the map or if you want to send it to me via skype i'll be very thankful. I count on you.
If you actually had spend time READINGTHEMAINPAGE instead of just going and asking, you’d know that the map is NOTRELEASEDYET. And I guess Blizzard will put it on BNet without a Lock and we can just download it & look into it. Will probably be delivered with a new Modfile or something and we get a new Categorie in the Editor called “Custom Maps” (where we now can open Challenges & Campaign).
"why not start with 3 lanes, then they connect to 2, then split up to 3/4 or something, its just booring to have the same maplayout in every dotagame (in sc2, lol, wc3, dont know about hon)"
In that case you might want to check out my map, Hero Attack. It's been out for over a month, but unfortunatly it hasn't been played because the popularity system makes it impossible to get a game started. Here is a video link:
What about making a 'SC2 Mapster' Dota, where every 'Active' or Decent mapper can import there own hero into the map. So Not only there will be original Hero's but there would also be an abundance of community in the map.....
I am pirate and I support this message. There'd need to be a project manager in charge of the basics and balance. The mods could even work it into an SC2 Mapster Contest! It just need to be made sure that any given hero wasn't too badass/OP but that could be part of the contest requirements..
Could even be split into 3-4 contests: Tank Hero/ DPS Hero / Support Hero (alternatively melee/ranged dps)
I'd love to re-use the characters from FC17 in such a map.
OK, I am SO EXITED to have all those new models for use in the editor. Also, I love the chess theme they have set up. Can't wait to play it, should be better than the poorly made DOTA maps we get sometimes.
Discuss.
OK, i'm TERRIBLY NOT excited, because we already have DOTA like games that NO SC2 mod will ever be remotely as good... HON, LOL, the upcoming DOTA 2 from valve... if you like playing DOTA style games, i strongly suggest you purchase HON, your money will be well spent.
You should be excited for the simple fact that you are on a modding forum, and them doing this means the editor will need to improve immensely. If them making a DOTA map is what it takes, I'm all for it!
I do agree that there is way too much of its kind around now though. Then again lots of people seem to want to play it.
What makes you think they'll improve the editor? At most we'll get some shitty models (half of which we already have since they're SC characters) and some stupid chess-board terrain. Anything else can already be done with the editor as it is, so I just don't get why you guys are excited.
So we'll get models of sylvanas and the blade-master, maybe a few new ones. Sure that's nice, but still. Not that big a deal.
You obviously haven't run into the limitations of the editor yet, if you had used the inventory system or custom UI for example, you would understand. Blizzard said themselves the inventory system was largely incomplete.
They have also said they are allowing us to track the mouse coordinates among other things.
So yes, they are improving the editor, and alot of it has to do with the fact that they are running into limitations themselves.
In summary, if you are a modder, it is a big deal.
I really don't think that Blizzard is making this map as a competitor to Heroes of Newerth, or any of the other DotA type maps. They are doing these maps, to show people what can be done inside the SC2 Editor, that they chose to make it like DotA is not the point at all, the point is really to give us some examples and ideas for our own maps. That they got hooked and started custom modelling etc. is a whole other story.

I am a modder but, no offense, I'm not making the typical cliche map that utilizes things like first person, or inventory systems. Again, I mean no disrespect to those who make those kinda maps, but ever since the editor was released that's been all anyones made, those and tug games. I'm going old-school so the limitations you speak of don't effect me.
But if they're making the editor more robust, then I can see the excitement, I've hit some dead-ends myself (due to my own inexperience, not the editor) and I can understand how frustrating it is. Must be doubly-so when you can't over-come them because they're the editor itself.

Sorry but that's is a very shallow comment. Inventory systems are used in all sorts of games, and there is nothing cliche about first person or maps that use inventory systems, if anything "going old-school" is much more cliche I'm sorry to say.
But anyway, the fact is they are improving the editor because of it, and if you look at the other custom games they are making, you will notice that they have some other more 'innovative' concepts.
I really don't understand why you would be negative about it, even if all they did give us was models, it's stil something for nothing.

Going old-school would be cliche, if I wasn't the only one doing it. Inventory and FPS are nice, but when that's ALL anyone makes, it gets repetitive. I mean I keep tabs on the maps available on bnet, and it's all minigames and gimick-maps. Those are nice, but there's no real substance. No diplo maps, no grand rpgs, no innovative maps. It's all maps that utilize the new features. Sorry, but it does get tiresome. And if you wanna take offense to that, then by all means. But seriously, seeing the same thing over and over is just so bothersome. It's like seeing fifteen thousand TDs.
That's fine, but there is nothing cliche about FPS or inventory. You also contradict yourself, you want maps of substance like grand RPG's. Guess what, RPG's generally require an inventory system and often custom GUI.
The reason most maps are currently small minigame maps, is because RPG's and such take WAY more time and people are either still working on them, or have hit limitations in the editor.
So by your own reasoning, you yourself should be excited :)
I have mixed feelings. I know Blizzard is pretty bad at creating custom maps. So Im unsure what angle they are taking with this.
Just casual fun or a more competitive dota style?

My thought patterns are erratic. I know the game hasn't been out long enough for there to be any "real" maps, but that does little to alleviate the depressing feeling I get when all I see are gimicky minigames. Emotions rarely abide by logic, after all. And I know RPG's use inventory system, I'm not bashing inventory systems, or FPS' or anything. It just seems like ever since the editor was released, people ONLY care about the new things they can do, and while that's perfectly understandable, it's annoying for old sticklers like me. I prefer more... down to earth maps, none of this fancy UIs or camera nonsense. It just seems like people's forgotten their roots, and all the great accomplishments made, and all they care about is making another FPS/RPG utilizing the fancy new tools. And again, while perfectly understandable, doesn't make it any less tiresome for me lol.
I think what gets me most, is the dreadful lack of variety more then anything. Not so much there being FPS' and whatnot, but there only seems to be like three types of maps out there. This is prolly because the game hasn't been out that long.. then again the editor was released months ago, so maybe not.
But I remember back on WC3, there was just so much variety, well before DOTA took over. There was Uther party, the various Escape from.... maps, diplos in every possible combination including galactic ones, there were racing games, sports games, risk, LoTR games, DBZ games, TDs, tug maps, hell there was even porn! There was just so much variety, and now all there is, is tug maps and various FPS maps. I want variety :(
Well I guess your expectations at this point are probably unfair considering how long it's been out, and also factoring in the extra complexity involved in the editor compared to Wc3. Half of the people around here are still figuring out how to use it.
Those of us who have spent more time on it, and want to be more creative in certain areas are finding some limitations along the way.
From what I have heard, I suspect they started off as internal mods that the staff were making for fun. Keep in mind many of the people in the game industry are just like you and me and enjoy this sort of thing - many of them started off as modders as well. If they want to have a bit of fun whilst at the same time improving the editor to do so, I'm all for it.
I don't know, when was the editor released? I know for a fact it's been out for several months, I don't think my expectations are too high. I mean I know map making isn't done over night, but we should be seeing more then simple minigame maps and simple games. After so many months we should atleast START to see more "real" maps trickling in, shouldn't we? How long does it bloody take? @_@
Well I have been working a good 5 hours per day (plus 20 hours per weekend) on my map since release, and I'm only just starting to be ready to get into beta now. I also know of some modders aren't releasing their maps yet because of certain limitations. Some are more limiting, and some as simple as the lack of map protection.
So yeah, personally I think your expectations are unrealistic :). I mean why haven't YOU released a "real" map yet? (or have you?)

too bad they didnt cooperate with a few of the most awesome map makers of all times :P
Like, blizzard does all the things they are good at. custom stuff, modifying the editor, and the real mapsters make the map!<3 :P
