Sorry if this is the wrong forum, couldn't figure out which one was meant for general questions. Also im aware these have probably been asked before but I couldn't find my answers by searching.
Just got sc2 so wana figure out a few things before I start making a map.
1. Is there any better editors other than he one that comes with the game, or did they get it right this time? I always used 3rd party editors in the past.
2. Using the standard editor (you have to sign with your Bnet account) could I make a map with one account and continue to edit/publish it on another account?
3. (ive only ever made maps, not mods) So im still a little unsure what a mod entails. I am aware you have to download a mod and install i before you can play a modded map correct? I always thought a mod was basically adding things to the game that weren't there before. (graphics, skins ect) Now it seems you can edit any graphic and make anything without the need to mod.
Sorry getting off topic, ive seen people made custom units on here (like wc3 footman, or sarah kerrigan) and id like to use a infested kerrigan, or a infested duran on my map. But id like it to be playable from Bnet (unlikely with current system, but still) I assume I can add those units to my map and host it and play like any other map on Bnet?
Lastly... does a infested kerrigan model exist? Where is the best place to find things like that if they do?
Thanks in advance... look foward to using this site as I start messing around with the editor.
1. They got it pretty damn close to right this time. If you're going to be using GUI for triggers then there is nothing else you will need to get started.
2. Sure. You don't have to ever publish the map until you want to use it on BNET. You can test your map through the editor. Even if you do publish, you can delete it from your account and republish (though there is a delay until the name is available again, much like website domains).
3. You don't need to use a mod. The mod is primarily for reuse of assets/triggers/data etc. over the span of several maps. If you want to just make one map, there is virtually no reason to worry about mods.
4. You can use custom assets and still play the map on BNET just fine.

There is some 3rd party editor called MilkyWayEdit afaik, but I did not hear anything from it lately. It was mainly used during beta, when the galaxy editor was not available.
However, there are some 3rd party tools, which can support the galaxy editor in certain tasks (for example the recently announced Item Wizard or 3rd party script editors).

As far as I am aware, no, that is not possible without changing the publish name of the map (resulting in a popularity reset etc). This is assuming you want to publish the map with one account and continue publishing it with another one.
If changing the name and resetting popularity are no issues for you, then yes, its perfectly possible.

Mods in SC2 are basically container files. You can edit all the stuff you want in your map, or you can use a mod, which then gets used by your map. Mods can include imported files, like models and icons, data stuff, like units and abilities, trigger libraries. no terrain.
Advantages of using a mod over a map include the re-usability on multiple maps; they only need to be downloaded once. Also for new updates, you can change the map or the mod files separately, so the user does not have to re-download the entire package. And you can circumvent the 10.5 MB restriction for single map files by splitting the map into multiple mods. Disadvantage would be using multiple of your upload slots.
For published maps, mods will be downloaded automatically, so the user does not notice a difference between a 1 file map or a map using multiple mod files.
For singleplayer only maps, you need to download the mod separately.

Sure. For an infested duran, you could have a look here, the Zerg Harbinger model. Not sure, if the model is finished, though.

The Kerrigan model from the campaign does not suit your needs? Use campaign dependencies to use it (if you don't know how, use the forum search).
I don't think anyone made an alternative model yet.
1. No. The galaxy editor is AMAZING. You can do virtually anything with it as long as you know what your doing. It's very easy once you learn the basics.
2. You make your maps locally, it doesn't matter if you are logged in or not. Its saved locally. Then you log in to whatever account you want and upload it to battle net under that account's name.
3. A mod (aka dependency) is sort of like a map file but with just data and imported resources. And then you can use any mod file to get those resources and data into the map. So I could make a mod file where I create a new race. And then make a bunch of different maps using that one mod as a dependency, and that way I wouldn't have to re-make the race for each map.
4. Yes, you can import custom models and use them in the game like normal. There is a kerrigan model in the game already. You have to enable campagin dependencies (campagin dependencies are the mod files blizzard made that contain all the single player units). There a lots of tutorials on how to do this.
Basiclly, you can do just about anything with the editor if you know how to do it. It's a little confusing at first, but you will quickly get the hang of it. Feel free to send me PMs with any questions you have. Welcome to sc2mapster :D

Wow... thanks for the quick replies. Clears a lot up...
Didn't notice the infested kerrigan now I found her, I was just looking at the units when I hit f7 and was wondering why they excluded some models from the editor.
haha I literally just opened up the editor, can't wait to get started... thanks a lot.
