it's been a lot of time since I checked on the mapping/modding community in Starcraft 2, and I was wondering what was its status and if there's some cool map with new custom content, like new models, icons, sounds and such!
Last time I heard the new BattleNet was quite limited on the weight of each map? Is it still like that?

Well, that part changed quite nicely. Map limit is now 20 MB per file, and you can attach mods (which can provide everything except terrain for your map) to go past that limit. each account is limtied to 100 MB or 20 files total though.
There arent any released maps with decent amounts of imported assets yet though. Probably due to a lack of modelers. Biggest source of models is World of Warcraft currently since we can export those as .m3 and import them into sc2 fairly easily.
I think the HoMM map uses a decent amount of imported models.
My map uses 3 imported models, and sounds for 2 of them (Lich and Maiev), but I dont think that really counts as much :p
Only 20 files limit? Doesn't that limit a bit too much the authors? Maybe someone is very creative and comes up with 21 maps and he's forced to delete one of them!

Yeah, the custom map system improved, but it's still not enough.
As for new assets, I haven't seen anything special out there yet. Some map has medieval/WoW models, but that's all.
