As in two computers working on a map over the internet? I've got an idea and a possible friend that I could probably convince to work on it with me, but I'd like to be able to work on it as well. Suggestions?
Also thanks for putting this website together, I've been reading through some of the threads, tutorials, and a lot of the weekly terrainings for inspiration, this site is exactly what I needed :)
Welcome to sc2mapster! Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions or need anything ;)
You can not have two people work on the exact same map file at the same time. What you can do is have one person working on triggers while another works on data. Once you're both finished, you should be able to 'merge' those maps together by copying the triggers over. I'm not sure if this still works with the most recent version of editor, but at the very least, you should be able to merge them via sc2components.

Well, Data is just XML which can be made with any text editor and can be directly copy pasted from and to the editor. Triggers can be exported as a library and be imported into any other map again.
get dropbox its free, tell your friend to get drop box, make a shared folder, and then Each person has the map at a time, I work in a team of 3 and this way actually works great, because one person will be working, and the other will be resting, this way neither gets burnt out.
With drop box, you have a shared folder, and when you save to drop box, you update the current file for both of you at the same time. Its really great.
Yes- if you are in a team, you should definitely get a dropbox account. It's free and it lets you share your documents quickly. Me and the Almaity are developing Starmon (the world's best map ever). Because we're in opposite time zones, we're rarely awake at the same time, which means that one of us can work while the other one sleeps. Whenever I want to work on the map, all I need to do is open my dropbox folder and I already have the most up-to-date version of the game waiting for me.

Awesome! That's exactly what I had in mind! Sort of like google docs but with an SC2 map. All right, I'm a little more hopeful now, this thing might actually see the light of day! I know me, and I get burnt out if I take on a massive project alone... It'll be nice to get my friend in on it. I'm still a LOOOOONG ways off from actually testing it, but when it's ready you guys will be the first to know! Thanks for the info, will check out the drop box.
But you cant edit the same file at the same time. The editor and the "testing cycle" is not built for that.
If you want to edit the map at the same time, you have to split your tasks. One person makes a mod while the other makes the maps. Then you will have to do some checkups every now and then and try it out in combination. This is really tricky though. I would suggest that you simply take turns in editing the map.
Actually, when not taking turns, as pointed out earlier, most things can be copy pasted easily, and the in-editor load times while switching between maps to do so can be avoided by saving as .sc2components when only modifying data and then just overwriting/adding the new xml parts to the "live" maps files. Although I believe the easiest way is to just simply copy either triggers or terrain instead of data, especially when not using the .sc2components method. So if you're working with a friend, I highly recommend each of you specialize in one area and focus on that (I do Data, Zelda does triggers, but that doesn't mean we don't use the other persons module when necessary) so that if you do end up working at the same time, one of you will be able to easily copy paste into the other persons map.
And yea, Dropbox is great for sharing map files while Google Docs is great for sharing brainstorm/changelog/to-do list documents (Zelda and I have a document where we just write down what the other person needs to do for our systems to work. A lot of the things i do need trigger support in Starmon, and if he occasionally needs something more complex from data or some photoshop work he adds it to the list for me to do)

or alternatively you can both do a map.. which is the same. just swap once in a while to copy paste what you each have done
to answer your question (?), no you can't share a map online live (that would be cool :) )
That is most unfortunate... So all these amazing maps I play in SC arcade were all made by individuals? How do teams do it?

longest time would be spent in testing / refining to get what you need / want
edit:
you can copy paste practicaly everything exept instinct and happy accidents
doing two maps is better than one .. to get one final third that reaps from both :)

mmmm taking turns ... brrrrrr sounds awful
again
you do 2 maps and add copy paste what the other has done at certain specific times (again the copy pasting exist in data triggers terrain ...)
edit: so you can best discuss issues via "versions" of the same map ...
