Every now and then Sixen demotes inactive mods and finds replacements for them (usually people that asked him and qualify). The only time moderators are added without removing one is if a new forum section opens that needs moderation (The melee section being the latest example. the AI and cinematic sections have gotten little attention up to now (3 threads for each...)). Ofc, it might actually not be this way - I just know my "generation" of mods got promoted this way. (Who was it again? Me, Taco and xCorbo i think, DrSuperEvil as well maybe--
HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP - just checked mod forums again. The four of us I just mentioned have been mods for EXACTLY 1 year now - We got promoted 15th July 2011!
There are too many mods for a website as inactive as this one, as such power plays get involved and it creates drama that flares up from time to time.
There are a few mods that put themselves above the top map makers because of the mod status, as such, it has driven nearly all talented map makers away from the site, as has clearly been demonstrated in the past. One could argue that these map makers are too busy to be involved, but it usually comes down to the fact that they had a run in with some people and thus left quietly.
The majority of the mods are here because of the presumed "popularity incoming event" for custom map making with the release of Heart of the Swarm. As such, at this moment they are not needed, but they are presumed to be needed in the future.

I think that's a stupid analysis. There is no other site for them to go to. What really drove people away was the shit that is the popularity system.

How dare you call my analysis stupid, I am your bland chinese food god, and don't you forget it!
But it is true, it was not until we released the beta for Tofu that we actually had a lot of the developers of the most popular projects join us and discuss the staff here that we saw everything, or I dare say, everyone we ever had a problem with, in a new light. And we suddenly realised, well hey, maybe we weren't at fault, maybe it was just these guys are douche bags if everyone else is thinking along the same lines of us.
I get on with most mods here and they have my respect, so I am not talking about them.
Well, most of those so called top projects aren't so "top" to begin with. Then again it's pretty subjective of what you call "top" and what not. So, what exactly are we talking about here?

Well, I'll agree on that too many mods part. This many isn't really needed. But how many of us do you really see post? I mostly just notice Zelda, Moz, xCorbo and DrSuperEvil in the parts of the forum I regularly visit.
But... Power plays? I'm sorry if I'm just oblivious or have a bad memory, but what? As it was mentioned earlier in this thread, moderation is really loose here. Mostly because it's not entirely necessary, we don't have many trolls, flamers and so on, and those that we do have are more or less accepted by community members. I'm guessing the incidents you may call power plays are the ones where some of these "accepted trolls" have just gone too far and it was about time we swung the tempban-hammer. Again, sorry if I just missed it or simply can't remember, it could be because I don't think I'm one of those mods anyone had a problem with, and if I am they seriously could have told me if I was out of line.
I'm beginning to regret even having started writing this post and just erased over half of it as it's most likely going to start a stupid and pointless argument. If anyone wants to comment on what little of my opinion I have left in this post, don't expect me to answer. I'm probably gonna keep my distance from this thread, I really don't feel like arguing.
I became a mod because I know my part of the editor and very few others have an equal understanding of those aspects. Therefore I was the most likely to be qualified to give an unbiased opinion when reviewing issues of potential controversy.
Also the former wiki moderator vanished and I had written the most pages.
The reason you see my name in the data forum alot is because I answer and often solve most basic questions within the first post. As the issue has been resolved no other people tend to post on the thread.
With regards to the mods being not needed, the data forum had over 30 posts yesterday (and surprisingly few from the same people). To be honest I hardly have to use my moderator powers often as most people on this site are well behaved. Usually I move threads to the correct forums if they have been posted in the wrong section (more likely to have a relevant answer) or delete stuff on the makers request. Biggest perk is not having the 15 sec delay between posts.
As for the talented map makers leaving the site, I would blame D3 for eating up their time more than the moderators. Infact it was the same with WC3, there were several promising projects, maps and mod that never made it (Heart of the Storm mod even got as far as beta and that had a custom campaign for each new race).
Still, if you think this site is inactive, I would like to know of a more active one.

It seems everyone and their dog is a mod. I've gotten used to seeing the orange user names.

Examples please.

Out of all the top projects nearly no one is active on this website, use your imagination.
@DogmaiSEA: Go
I think you are saying. You made a horrible video which nobody liked and now you are sad.
I like the mapster code of "freedom of speech". I think Iv never seen such loose moderation (which suits me fine)

Trying to troll one of the three founding trolls of mapster is not going to end well my young friend.
@Hobrow: Go
Top projects as in "potential to be great" and projects that are on the top of the popularity list.
@DogmaiSEA: Go
Great, that makes Desert Strike 1338 (EU) one of the top maps. A map that has more spelling errors then it has lines of code.
Blame the player base.
@Hobrow: Go
Oh god I hate maps like that.
