first of all great job from all the mapmakers here and a great community website. First of all i'm not good in mapmaking but i do follow new map concepts. I would like make a suggestion to all these creative mapmakers out there. Maybe the Admins could even make a contest for the best creations.
We all know there has been plenty of tournaments in the beta allready and even more tourneys to come. To attract sponsors for bigger tournaments they have to get something in return , wich in most cases is exposure . But its not enough to just name a tourney after a sponsor. With the mush improved galaxy editor alot more can be done to attract these sponsors.
What i would like to see is , possible branding of maps with sponsor logos and advertising boards . Maybe even have special decals on units or structures with sponsor logos .
I'm sure that there are creative people here on this forums who could maybe come up with some ideas how to implement them , like boards ,textures and other advertising ideas for maps.
Are you talking adding advertising inside "normal" maps so people can see them in the video. Or adding advertising inside custom maps to pay map makers?
I think he means that if we make decals or textures or doodads out of a companies logo and put them on the map, we can attract sponsorship to host tournaments and such, like nascar has on their cars or figureskating has on the sides of the rink.
It could be either way , say for example you come up with a brilliant idea for a UMS maps and have say a company e.g coca cola and they want to sponsor your'e map , wouldnt it be cool you could show them how there is advertising from them on that map .
Or say you want to host a tourney 1 vs 1 melee , dont you think if i approach you to sponsor you would be more inclined to do so if there is some logos of your'e company on the maps where the players play on.
The possibilities are huge in my opinion . What i suggested is to come up with ideas and how to implement them on future maps .
Well, that is a good idea as long as it's subtle. If there's advertisement all over the place I don't see why to pay for the game in the first place.
Also, I think I've read a report somewhere that companies aren't really interested in having their ads in games. That is because they don't get accurate numbers from that (how many players get close to the advertisements, how often/long do they see it, how many don't even notice them, do they have the most up-to-date advertisements).
They prefer advertisement, say, on the post login screen of SC2 - that's where it was in Wc3 (this header bar where they advertised for some stuff).
And for tournaments I think it's better for them to do as they do now - sponsoring the tournaments itself and having the moderators / shoutcasters advertise for them.
Like day9, who's now advertising for Razor gaming equipment in his King Of The Beta. It always has a greater effect when a person is telling you something (especially such a nice guy as day9 :) ) than when it's just written somewhere.
By the way, in order to host a tournament on SC2 you have to get a license from Blizzard. I doubt they will let you modify the maps in order to put ads.
I'd love any idea to make money with maps without
A) Becoming a gross sell-out and
B) Getting sponsors stuffed down your throat,
but the problem is that Starcraft, which is basically 'the sport' in our situation, is actually clearly created and owned by Blizzard. Hence you'll always have something to do with Blizzards right to the game, making this whole ordeal even harder.

Well... Blizzard was raped into ass by Korean tournaments with 0 profit so now they're gonna be more fox.
You could advertise SC2Mapster and hold a contest here, :).
