I've also had some trouble organizing tests for my custom map. If you add/find me (screenname: "rut"), i'd love to help you out. Afterwards, if you want to help me with mine, that'd be great! (I'm usually on late in the evening, around 11:00-ish Mountain Time on the US server.)
Just a thought to throw in there, but SC2mapster could spotlight maps weekly, and play them, it'd also be nice to give direct constructive feedback from mapper to mapper if you know what i mean, some people are already adressing this community for their tests (i believe that DotA map is being tested here)
The way it'd work would be as followed
-A mapper will send their map to a moderator, moderator of this event.
-Moderator will consider the map, obviously if the map is too early, without specific instructions for testing (e.g. you don't tell the moderator you sent in the small, unfinished map because you want to test a specific mechanic) then the idea will be rejected.
-Moderator picks some maps from that list, and the maps will be hosted at say, friday evening.
This would cycle through a bit, so depending on submissions your .01 version update may not get tested every single week.
The SC2 Dota map, as mentioned above, is uploaded onto battle.net with a clear -beta- tag on it and is being tested. All it takes is a little popularity boosting to get it played and tested.
yea, thats it... just a little popularity boosting... right. How do you propose us non-DOTA creators do that with the current system? it's impossible..
i really like this idea. every week sc2mapster could host a custom games lobby for a new map.
that way the map gets popularity and the author gets to test their map. plus it'd be a lot of fun to play as against the sc2mapster community.

Without chat channels or named game lobbies, how do you all generally organize tests of a map?
Clarification. I'm asking due to my being unsure how to organize a test, and organizing is not my strong point!
They'll be adding Chat Channels in at a later point. You'd need to just contact friends or host the map publicly, =|.

Does the game come with friends?
