I know that many of you are working on maps right now that you're planning to release on HotS launch day as if it's the 'second coming' of the map making scene...
Everyone will have a chance to have their maps seen early on, when players may be more willing to try new maps.
I suspect we'll see 90% of the same maps appear again from WoL because they have a following, but never the less I think it's worth figuring out how other people are going to go about getting their maps noticed. I also want to hear what other people have to think about their chances at having their map 'blow up' on launch day.
I disagree, some of the mappers who have published their maps are content with it and I do not see them creating more. I did however see a few mappers come back with a message "hey guys Im back" in some form. As for me, my music galaxy map posted on the front page got a few views and players interested in seeing this map evolve. I may continue to work on it when Hots comes out.
Another project I am working on is a remake of Power Towers. I plan on adding/editing small things each time and publish and play. That is how I map. I do not think that anyone can just simply have their map explode in popularity. Only simple bland maps get played the most. Most arcade players play super-casual maps and most of the mappers here are innovating and creative. I can think of at least 100 maps that were creatively made with lots of work but barely gets any play.
Popularity != sucess, maybe only a small percentage. I feel that if you enjoy making maps and you enjoy playing your maps with people than that will be a sucess. When Power Towers comes out with my edits, I plan on playing that a lot and I know that my bnet friends and I will enjoy it, and that will be a "popular" map amongst us.
Its about just enjoying playing arcade maps and sharing them with new friends. Case and point is playing this map again called: Polar Shift. All you do is move your dark templar around avoiding obstacles while the screen forcingly moves. Funny, simple, no depth really but after playing this all day everyday for the past week, there are now open lobbies for this map and I can get a full house within 15 minutes (as oppose to never).
If you click QueenGambit's team it says in a comment made by QueenGambit: "Desert Strike Broodwar: It will be the fast rush small version of my popular Desert Strike map." But it doesn't necessarily say she created THE Desert Strike it just says "MY popular Desert Strike map [...]" Also it is in no way related to this topic AFAIK.
Since my melee mod is based on having lots of campaign units and abilities added to it I will create a HoTS version, but not right after release, and I haven't bought HoTS yet so... my mod will have to wait.
I thought we were supposed to follow one of the two standardized rules of marketing for video games:
Option 1: Have a cover picture of a gruff manly guy who looks like he just left prison in heavy armor holding his weapon and in the backdrop smoldering remains of a city or castle.
Option 2: Have cover pictures of 3d scantily clad females with impossibly large breasts wielding a weapon.
I mean who cares about gameplay or uniqueness when you have marketing like that =P.

@QueenGambit: Go You didn't make Desert Strike, you fucking liar.
Member since 2010. Made the -The Thing- [Revival] game. Nostalgic of the WC3 days.
Calm down son.
I'm confused, did anyone in this thread even claim to have created Desert Strike?
