I'm interested in finding out whether a unit that entered a specific region belongs to protoss/zerg/terran. I know this is a property that is available in the data editor etc., but is it available in the game?
There is a comparison to check the Owner of the trigger unit's race where you than can tell on wich Race it should work.
The name of the comparison is "Race of Player"

I haven't tested it for this field, but you should be able to use http://wiki.sc2mapster.com/galaxy/triggers/catalog-field-value-get/ to access the field from the data editor.

the race in the data editor is for sorting purposes in the GE only. it's not an actual property a unit has.
Not true, there are validators that can check this information.
