I'm looking at the unchanged "Broodlord" unit in the data editor and trying to figure out the function of this unit, because I want to create that same function (spawning broodlings and sending them out to attack) on a different unit. But am completely at a loss here. I'm looking at the broodlord weapon which is the "brood lord broodling strike" and there is no effect-effect linked to this weapon!~ WTH, I see on the unit tree the broodling escort damage and realize this is the damage that is caused at impact, but yet again the weapon doesn't have anything set for the effect-effect. Second, I can't find how the broodlord spawns broodlings fuction. I was thinking maybe the broodlord used the same principal as the "Hatchery spawn larva" behavior, but it doesn't. So trying to set this up on a differnt unit is prooving difficult. Does anyone have some information regarding the functinoality of the broodlord so that I can accomplish my goal?
The broodlord uses a carrier-like hanger to produce broodlings, but it does it with a hidden build queue and with autobuild. I don't know off the top of my head how it does damage, though…
I tried to do the same thing and have an alternate solution, you can copy the broodlord then mess around with it to make it exactly like the unit you want, the only glitch is that the broodlings will still be flying above him, working on a fix for that.
P.s. What the hell is that in your picture a squid, a rolling part of a dam, a sub?
Edit 1:
Got it :)
The flying broodlings are a sperate unit so you just go to the unit broodling (escort) and change height in the U.I. tab.
I advise against removing them altogether as I think the attack fails without them.
The Arm Magazine ability is quite tempramental. With the brood lord it creates the broodling escourt unit as an external unit but it does not attack on its own. The weapon on the brood lord is purely to issue the escourts with the order to attack. The Arm Magazine for external units requires the attack ability and a weapon (even though they can be disabled using validators/requirements) to order the units to attack. It is easily possible to use Arm Magazine as a spawner for units that can attack targets of their own independent choice (without suiciding like broodling escourts) but can be rallied to attack a single target by using two behaviours to periodically activate the weapon.
