Im working on a Third person shooter map, and so the camera is behind the hero, and far clip and graphical settings greatly effects the frames per second and playability
I have lowered Far Clip and Shadow Clip alot, but its still not quite good enough FPS (while on ultra graphics setting)
then I tried changing my graphics settings to high or medium, and it was a BIG difference
instead of 14 FPS (skipping frames) i was getting like 40-60 FPS (very playable)
Now is there a way to force players of my map to lower their graphics settings? (i have seen some other maps use a message to tell the player to lower their graphic settings on the loading screen but i would like to avoid that)
Or somehow force all the terrain, units, doodads, water, etc, in my map to only display "medium" type graphics all the time? (i dont care if it doesnt look "ultra", i rather have good FPS)
Wow, unbelievable that on a map help site someone has not replied to this.
From what I have learned so far the answer is yes.
1. You can't change the players computer settings. So if they are on extreme you can't force their sc2 game settings to low.
2. You can change the unit models and animations. Sort of a pain to do it unit by unit.
3. You can lower effects of units via triggers. This is probably easiest.
I have not done #3 yet so I can't give you a step by step. I will once I get it finished.
I played a game that on medium sc2 settings would give 3 fps near the end (1,000 units) and tried it using standard sc2 unit models which gave 10 fps.
That does not seem like much but 3x improved speed improvement took the map from unplayable near the end to being able to still make buildings and move around.
You can tier it too. Meaning start game on higher settings then via triggers reduce the graphics as the unit count goes up.
I don't know the command to reduce the graphics yet but I will soon.
If someone here has done it please chime in.
