In the data editor go to the units tab, edit the field Unit - Flags an check "Unselectable" and "Untargetable". You also have to remove the footprint if the unit has one. Set the value of Movement - Inner Radius to "0" and voila.

this would be the correct answer... youll also notice theres a ton of other ways a player can interact with a unit... that you may or may not want to turn off
you should not have to do anything with the foot print ... movement or radius setting on the unit to just disable the ability to select a unit....
how would I go about creating a unit, such as a beacon where units can walk over and a player cannot select? And what fields do I change?
@TDici: Go
Just do it with triggers
Make target unit unselectable
