Depends what kind of symmetry you are aiming for. The most frequently used symmetry is rotational (diagonal). The rotational (circular) symmetry may prove useful when creating maps for an uneven player count.
For 1 on 1 team maps you generally use diagonal symmetry since you want to cluster each group of players next to each other and it insures that all resources and terrain are symmetrical between the two forces,
For FFA or 1 vs 1 maps or FFA small team maps (2v2v2v2 etc) then circular symatry is better as it insures a fair combat environment with equal spacing between teams..

For creating a melee map, which is better for what? Is there a difference?

Depends on the map purpose.
