Lower the units turn rate in the Data Editor. Stationary turn rate and the other option can be edited, and acceleration/speed and all that good stuff. A good slow turn rate is usually around under 300.
I've tried altering those values and I still can't get the effect that I see in Star Battle. When I try in the editor, I get units that can move backwards slowly turning to the direction they are moving.
Instead I'd like them to go in a curve, always moving in the direction they are facing. Do you know how I can get that effect?
This seems to be a function of normal flying units, but I can't for the life of me figure out what controls it. I've heard some people say that it requires a low value for the unit's "Movement - Lateral Acceleration" field, but units with 0 lateral acceleration still move in a direction they're not facing.
If you want to ensure the unit doesn't move sideways or backwards while turning, you can always enable the "Turn Before Moving" flag, which will make the unit rotate to face the direction it wants to move before it can start moving. Not ideal, but might work in the interim.
Ah, you're right! I just tested with Lateral Accelleration of 0.1, and that gave a curved movement like the one I was talking about. Maybe 0 lateral accelleration means infinite.
As expected though, units using this solution can still turn quickly to their destination if you order them to move in the opposite direction they're currently facing, as well as if you order them from a standstill. Optimally I'd like the ship to always start out moving in the direction they're facing and then curve back to their destination point. Still, it's exactly what I wanted to know.
The map that I'm working on requires this. I remember seeing a flag called "turn before moving" somewhere. I haven't done my movements yet, but I remember seeing the flag when I was looking around. It might be what you're looking for.
For units with flyer mover, it does nothing. For ground units it will make a unit come to a complete halt whenever making a turn, however small. It doesn't look very good on flying ships, unfortunately.
The Site Operation (Smooth Rotation) can do something similar in that it limits how fast the host model can turn irrelevant of how fast the unit is actually turning. With that SOp you can get the unit to look like it is flying backwards at times.
How can I make units turn slowly when they are moving like the ships do in Star Battle?

Is the Site Operation (Smooth Rotation) what you are looking for effect wise? That gives an effect like what you are describing.

I really don't know. I've never used that site operation, so I don't know how it works.
Here's a test map to show what kind of movement I don't want. The battlecruiser is moving sideways and backwards, which doesn't look good.
