I've been practicing at the Galaxy editor and I really want to get better at it. I decided to try and create a new unit/custom unit. After viewing several tutorials, I went ahead and managed to make a unit, but then I noticed a problem: the actor it was locked to, which was a custom made actor that was copied off another actor, was also locked to the original unit, despite being custom made. Sorry if that sounded confusing, basically, if I edit something in the actor for the custom unit, it also edits the actor(s) for the original unit it was modeled off.
Here are the steps I used to create my custom unit, please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it!:
7 ) Attached the actor I made to the "Fusion Hydralisk" I made, I did this by going into the actor and modifying the value to where a box (a thin one) came up in the top left hand corner with a drop down. In the drop down, I selected my "Fusion Hydralisk" and hit ok.
8 ) Adjusted the units settings and such, basically, this was the part where I edited models, damage, range, health, ect.
9 ) Tested the model, only to find that the original Hydralisk had the same abilities as the "Fusion Hydralisk" despite the two having custom actors and being two different units.
Hey, so to me it sppears that 2 different units are using the same actor, look at the actor and see in the list the units it has connection to, right click on the one you dont want and explain link. Now you can see how this original unit is still being used by the actor, its prolly in the events.
in the future it might be helpfull to duplicate the actor instead of copy, use to have the same kind of problems when i started.
I see what you mean. How hard is it to create a unit from scratch? And how do you do it? Like, if I try and make a unit from scratch, I can't add things to it, it just won't let me. Is there some sort of blank unit base you can use? Can you please link me to a tutorial for this that works?
I go unit first then Unit type actor and then build out from there depending on needs. If you want a composite unit though be prepared to sepnd several hours fidgeting with model offsets and rotations to get it just right.
Just go to the Units data type and right click the upper left display and say Add Unit, choose the default. With actors you must chack the Actor Type field when creating. Also with the events you must then link your unit to your actor.
Still time wise the devil is in the detail with the actors, especially when choosing what looks best for your tastes.
The stuff beginning with C before the name are the game defaults and editing those without caution can have severe consequences. For ecample altering that in the previous patch would set that field for all units to that value.
@DrSuperEvil: Go
No offense at all but I found what you said.... Confusing.
I really just want to be able to make my own units, even if it takes hours of work, yet everywhere I look, the tutorial either doesn't work or is way to confusing for me to understand. I've tried so many tutorials now and all of them have failed! I've followed them step by step and double checking to make sure I did the step 100% correctly, yet it still fails! I also can't seem to find a tutorial that is up to date with the current patch.... This might explain why they keep failing...
I know this maybe hard for you but can you please find, or even make, a step by step tutorial for making units from scratch? I'm not saying the unit has to use a custom model, I'm find with a built in model.
This is all really fustrating me, I've spent hours in that blasted data editor trying to figure out what I did wrong! I've tried nearly every possible thing I can think of! Help please!
Also, do you have Steam? I do really want to learn more about the Data editor but the other guy is always very busy, so if you have Steam, add me, it will make discussing the editor 10 times easier:

maybe this helps maybe it donĀ“t,
good luck
I prefer making new stuff from scratch. That way you know it does not have any glitches that you did not cause yourself.
For example the zerg larvae Train ability is hard coded to be buggy for the scourge train slot.
Your pics show us nothing except you are abusing the copy from field. Some pics of the actor events would be more useful.

ofc creating from scratch is always better but also very time consuming ;]

PM me and I will begin the slow learning process. Last time I tried to bring a person up to speed with the editor they got bored and gave up.
For a start read these two pages.

Else just post your trial map and I can give you specific details as to where you went wrong.

@DrSuperEvil: Go Thanks for the help but I found a working tutorial. I went through this and only found one error, which I'm currently working out with the tutorials creator. http://www.thehelper.net/threads/data-editor-a-vital-guide.151813/ I'll still seek you if I have any extra questions though. :P

No stream but I have a PM and I check it at least once a day (more often near weekends).
Besides, I have yet to see someone do something with data that surpasses me. Would be nice to though.
