Hey guys, i've been checking the tutorials section today and such - it might be my 3 hours sleep or something - but i can't seem to find any new tutorials that show me how to create new spells from scratch and ways to manipulate the spell effect that it produces.
I should probably be using the search function, but hopefully will get some useful help from people that do this kind of thing more often on the best start up tutorials to the more advanced over time.
Go into the wiki and check "Effects" in the data part. Specifically, persistents, search, set, damage, and apply behavior, and also check the behavior part of the wiki for "buff"s. That should fill you in on the mechanics for majority of spells.
There was a tutorial called "basic actors" or something like that, search for that, it'll explain how to use actors, Launch Missile effects and action actors, which are another important part.
Then check the sc2streamster data monday and newbie wednesday episodes, they probably are of some use (I cant remember all the topics they covered)
If you have more specific questions, feel free to post on the forums or PM me.
Also, search for the "mapster mentoring" thread, there is a list of people willing to help out newbs.
Here's a simple explanation on how abilities work:
Abilities consist of effects and actors, sometimes behaviors and other things.
"Effects" are a sort of interactions or functions. There is a large amount of effect types which all do different things (like searching for units, applying behaviors, launching missiles or damaging)
"Actors" are what control your models and sounds. Without these, there are no visuals. The most important field there is the "Actor events", those control what animations are played and when and where the actor is created.
"Behaviors" are things that are on unity, they cant exist without a unit. You'll mostly be using "Buff" behaviors, which are obviously buffs or debuffs. They work similarly to persistent effects but can also change the stats of units.
You have to use a combination of these to create a spell.
Thank you very much dude. I'll take a look at those and see what i can learn. My apologies for posting it in the wrong section, i wasn't entirely sure where to post it.
I forgot i had watched the sc2streamster VoD's a few times :)
Thanks, the little "101" you gave on each type of data that effects spells was quite useful. A thing i was wondering, if it's possible, is to change the effects of current spells within the game, such as the "psionic storm? that the protoss use, possibly making it affect a large area - increasing the visual size and increasing the speed it "pulses" as well as the colours and so forth?
Yes using catalog funtions with triggers. My brother is making a test map which will be out soon where you can customize ability fields ingame.
In the data editor the size and colours is set by the actor (High Templar Psi Storm Model) in the Art - Scale field and the Set Tint Color event action, while the period is set by the Create Persistent effect and the the area is set by the Search Area effect
As i'm very very new to the Galaxy Editor 'm not really sure what all those terms mean. I've mainly been focusing on Terraining and now trying to learn Data editting, which i think wont be to difficult.
Hopefully after i've learned a bit more by creating my own data spells and start to learn Triggering i will understand what i can and cannot manipulate :)
I'm currently learning some tutorials and will hopefully be able to be creative.
I'm not sure on the best place to start really, I want to just jump in and make a few spells, but i feel that my lack of experience with this and my creativity will get the better of me. Could you suggest a tutorial that talks about the basics - videos are preffered, But i will take a look at the wiki, it seems a bit...Complicated :\
This is where I started learning data . this is a great tutorial on how to make a basic ability, it covers basic behaviors, persistants, some actors, damage, stuns, and some other stuff.
Thanks very much, i'm currently going through ALOT of tutorials/videos and so forth, so much to learn :) Thanks for the link, i'll get to following it soon enough.

I'm not quite sure if this is a data or trigger thing so thought it easier to post it here. Any help would be very appreciated.

Its data, I'll move this to the data forums now.

This link should help you see all data fields.
