your first question? data or trigger editor... if you want a quick sloppy work. use triggers. if you want a cool looking spel that works every time. use data editor.
second you asked: In the war3 days you used to make unit projectiles and send them out in every direction to mimic a nova. Are there better ways now?
you can still do it this way ofc. but yes there are also better ways now. I suggest start looking up tutorials. if I'm correct there is 1 that talks about nova's (use search box)
There is a poison nova-like spell already on one of the hybrid units. If you are looking for a quick solution just tint it red and tweak it to your liking.

I'd like to make if possible a Flaming Fiery Nova effect originating from a unit encompassing the entire map (map is actually quite small)
I have no real idea how to do this. First off what would be best, data editor or triggers for this?

Thanks for the reply and answers.
I just did a few searches on the forums and tutorial section, nothing for a nova spell came up thou.
Take a look at the Ground Pound ability in ProzaicMuze's Force Effects tutorial. It's got an expanding AoE effect.
