Has anyone made and/or released anything that uses this feature from Warcraft 3? I would love to add something to my mod that would allow units to group in formations, ie zealots always move ahead of stalkers and sentries . . .
This should be triggered, could be quite fun to do, but when you say ALWAYS move ahead, do you mean, when you issue a move order, they should go in formation before moving forward, or should their end-position just end in the formation. I think the last option would be less painful, to both the creator and the player.
All the button did was make it so the units that are being issued an order all move at the same speed. They didnt keep any kind of "formation"
it just made it so the faster units did not run ahead of the slower units.
They would all move together at the slowest units speed.
You could potentially create a behavior that makes units move the same speed as the slowest unit that was given the exact same order?
I did something similar with my current mod, where I put fighter wings into a V shape after they launch from the hangar bays so they'll fly to a target location in formation.
It should be easy to do, just put all the units you want into a unit group. Then do a pick each unit from unit group action, and put them into a formation one a time. You'll need do some move unit to point with offset to get them to work. In my mod, I give each unit 10 seconds to move into their spot. After the 10 seconds, they all move out to the target area with a single move command. The collision boxes sorta keep them in formation while they move out together.
Sure, I've unlocked one of my old maps: battle at char. You can find the trigger under card plays, Creat Units - terran function. The fighter wing map is the one I'm currently working on, but the battle at char actually has zealots and marines moving in formation.
here's a sample video of what I'm talking about. I'm sure anyone can figure this out.
Eh, no, it actually formed a formation. Loose formation was free form, units didn't match speed, and bundled up in a tight ball, like SC2 does currently. Also, each unit has a formation rank value, melee-ish and tank-ish units were ranked to go in front, well ranged units and casters were ranged to go in rear. This data value was a stat you could edit in the unit editor per unit. The formation used these ranks in the forms of rank and file, a simple box formation where ranks would line up in order from front to back corresponding with their "rank value". So, to the contrary, WC3 actually did have formation control and abilities, though limited to the rank n' file.
Ack, god damnit, keep "submitting" too soon.
I've experimented with formations using the broodlord's attributes. The little broodlings hold formations even under direct control and you can have from free room on editing their formation style in terms of spacing and placement. If you make the anchoring unit (aka in this case, the broodlord) more of a dummy unit that is simply there for selection purposes? You can edit the "broodling" units to be simple marines, or vikings or whatever you want, completely targettable, but unselectable yet they respond to the commands given to the "broodlord" anchor. Simply rig an ability to where the "broodlord" dies when all it's escorts are destroyed, and tada! Working squadron/formation units.

Maybe I didnt play standard wc3 enough to know....
I know in custom games the formation button just made the units run the same speed or not...... like in dota when you has a bunch of summoned units your hero would slow down so he didnt run ahead of the summoned units....

I actually noticed units do not hold formation OR travel at the same speed like Wc3..It would be nice if you could toggle the speed. In WC3 they DID slow down to the slowest speed. But they also put melee units in front, casters in back, etc.

Thoughts? Possible?

@SoulCarver: I could have sworn when I play WC3 that it moves ranges units to the rear and melee to the front of the formation.
@ Sandround: Interesting. Any chance I could check out your mod, sandround? ;)
