An alternative might be an ennumerate area validated behaviour on the ammo unit of the missile. If the missile comes within range of a unit with the slow aura behaviour it applies the first level of slow by itself.

Standard enumerate area validator put in the buff disable field the validator uses the Search: Areas - Validator field to look for the buff emitting the missile slow. The buff when active slows the missile the first notch which should be down to reasonable speed or gives it a negative acceleration.
