The Goal: I want projected lights that I can attach to points on units.
What I've come up with so far: I've found the flashlight model that Blizzard used for Raynor's flashlight and I've figured out how to attach it to various hard points on units and adjust its scale to be bigger/brighter depending on what I want to attach them to. Its got no visible model except for the two lights so this is the best solution so far vs trying to screw around with the other light models I've found that all have physical shapes as part of their construction.
First hurdle: Unfortunately this flashlight model has two lights, one at the 'head' which is directed and another at the back which is just a radiating sphere. That sphere is undesirable to me since it scales with the model much like the head's and tends to just look bad and/or super-illuminates the unit I'm attaching the light actor onto. Ideally I really want that flashlight model but with only the directed light and not the sphere one.
Absolute ideal: The directed light responds to all three axis of scaling so I could make one that's thin/long or one that's wide/shallow etc. As it stands it seems that the light this model produces just scales itself to the biggest of the three axis and you can't shape it apart from just making it larger or smaller.
Efforts so far: I've acquired 3DS max and tried using the importer script but it fails with the flashlight due to some 'count' variable it doesn't know how to handle, it does import other doodads though like the floodlights but I'm also still wondering if the lights themselves get imported with its current version since the write up for the importer doesn't mention lights. This is my first time even seeing a 3d modeler so I really haven't a clue what I'm doing. :P
Anyone able to provide some insight or assistance? I'd greatly appreciate it :)
