    "Used Dialog Item"

    Here's a tutorial I wrote: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/tutorials/17969-dialogs-really-great-looking-dialogs-part-1/ . It includes a finished map that you can look at. There's also a part 2, and I'm working on part 3. The series is on-going.

    Sorry, I misread.

    As a rule, triggering on "damage dealt" is bad, and will cause lag. If there is a data solution, I'd use that.

    That said, I'm not sure how this could be done. I'd have to think about it.

    That's what shields are. You don't need a damage response, just give the unit shields.

    posted a message on A "tutorial" idea: making a map full of easy triggers

    I'm not sure there's a "one-size-fits-all" solution like what you're looking for. A map filled with beginner triggers would be... well, filled. There's a lot and it would be overwhelming. Personally, I think it's better if the individual tutorials are seperate. This allows for more focus.

    For something like this, I think it'd be better if the tutorial writer built the map step-by-step and showed you how to do it. It would be quite an endeavor, and it would be done in multiple phases.

    I have done something like this, for dialogs only. The tutorial starts here: http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/tutorials/17969-dialogs-really-great-looking-dialogs-part-1/, and it's on going. I'm working on part 3 currently. I'm thinking of adding video tutorials to acompany the text tutorials. Part 3 is an intermediate tutorial, so I'll definitely be adding video for that. I've included the map with each tutorial, and each one builds on the other. The goal is that the various parts will demonstrate how you can manage and organize multiple dialogs in a single map.

    I'm sure others have done the same or similar for other subjects, but I do think having a map attachment is a key part of a tutorial. Also, I think there is a lack of "putting it all together"-type tutorials.

    I'd have to say the funnest map we played was Identificationary, LOL. It's simple and fun, hahaha. It's just too bad that with a full group of players that you only get to go once and there are no time options.

    There actually are time options in the lobby that I didn't notice. Because it's such a crowd-pleaser, and because we missed some fairly important game options, we're gonna give it another go.

    Well, keep the idea in mind when the time comes.

    I think the point is: you should use all resources available to promote your map. Post on the various forums (here/Blizz/TL). Make a youtube video, get it newsed. And look into community-supported projects intended to help map exposure (like map night).

    Every little bit helps.

    @PhantomInfernal: Go

    Infernal, wasn't there a player that hacked the admin system and abused it to kick/ban players? I actually brought this up to Tordy yesterday, because it seemed like the BNet report system actually worked in the instance. Or maybe you just changed your map?

    You don't need a key to run a hash. The hash itself would be stored in the map, and the bank would store a password to be hashed. As I said, hashes aren't reversible (per se). Yes, it can be brute forced as you say. The larger the hash, however, the more difficult this becomes. However, since you don't need to match the actual password, just the hash, this could be a little easier. You just need any password that matches that hash, and it doesn't have to be the original.

    As motive said, however, the password would be transmitted over the network during map initialization. A packet sniffer could retrieve the password in plain text fairly easily.

    Ok. That's the kind of info Tordy was looking for. If the bank data is being transmitted over the network, thats going to be the weak link.

    Thanks Motive for clearing that up.

    @TimSin112: Go

    Hashes aren't reversible. The idea is that multiple strings can hash to the same thing. So it's feasible to accidently pick a string that hashes to the same string, but the longer the hash the less likely this is. From a hash, it's impossible to get the source string, because there's no way to determine how long the source string is. It is extemely difficult, although not 100% impossible, to hack. Brute force is the best method to hack it, which is exteremely inefficient.

    I think this is a pretty clever idea and it should prove stronger than just relying on bank security. However, the three options TimSin mention may or may not be viable ways to circumvent the hash altogether. Unfortunately, a system is only as secure as it's weakest link.

    posted a message on Video Map Review Channel

    I would like to start a map review video channel. I understand that there are at least 1-2 others, but I think there's room for more. I think these kinds of things are good for mappers, allowing them an opportunity to gain exposure and/or get some constructive feedback on their games.

    If you'd like your map reviewed in this format, please let me know by posting here or sending me a PM. Also let me know if you'd like to join in the review, and perhaps get a chance to talk about your map. If there are a large number of requests, I will be more likely to pick the ones were the mapper is willing to participate.

    I look forward to the opportunity.

    Thanks,

    JManV

    Haha yes. The case of the missing probe. :P It was a lot of fun, wasn't it? I'd love to see you again this week.

    Please note that I've changed the chat channel to "sc2mapnight". You can still idle in sc2mapster as well, but "sc2mapnight" will be the primary meeting place for map night participants.

    I'm excited! I can't wait until Friday...!

    hey, formatting sucks a bit (well, a lot actually, map list is catastrophic), and EST is definitely not GMT + 5. India is GMT+5 or something like that, and thats in the opposite direction of NA relative to Greenwhich. I think you meant GMT -6 :) (Hope i didnt sound rude, didnt mean to! Just pointing out mistakes ;) ) Btw, why the new thread?

    And i'll update mine now with the new info about the US thread.

    EDIT: Ok, you fixed formatting

    New thread because I am taking over as the host of map nights in the NA. QueenGambit works on Friday nights, and will be unable to attend. Therefore, I need to repost so that I could be the OP of the thread. Sixen will sticky this post shortly.

    Sorry about the formatting. I hit "Post" when I meant to hit "Preview".

    Also, do you have the steam address of the EU live stream? I'd like to post that here. [Nevermind. I guess I could have looked :P]
