    Template

This is the goal I am looking for...

    but not so.. boxxy.

All three bars should blend well with one another, with a height that can support text of 12x being written over it without it looking sloppy. I would prefer each bar to be broken into 5 segments. Just looking for something less boxxy, looking for a scale of about 250px wide by 185px high. Roughly 3/4th high as it is wide, bars should be at most 120px wide and hopefully no more than 30px high.

If I'm being overly demanding or unclear please let me know, I'm a terrible artist with a specific idea in mind.

Oh, direct attack! I'm sure there were others as well which submitted a map they had been working on since beta. ;)

I just want to clarify: MAD wasn't out in retail. We don't know how Blizzard filtered out released maps, and for all we know they don't count maps which were out in SC2 beta as released. I mean Blizzard's own game wasn't even released.

    @Koronis: Go

I'm not defending the contest, in fact I've stated several things Blizzard could've improved, such as being more clear on the rules and what 'released' exactly means. What I said is I think Photon Command and Zergling Round-up were good choices for Blizzard's purpose for their Drive-By playing. Yet some here continue to bash these winners and how bad they think these maps are.

This is the FIRST TIME ever I've seen people bashing other maps like this on these forums. Not only is it demoralizing towards the map makers, but it puts a negative spin on the community ("Don't try to come out with your map here if it's bad, we won't help you improve it, we'll just tell you it sucks!")

What you are doing is actually making map makers go elsewhere for feedback on their maps.

If you still got a beef with how Blizzard judged this contest, that's fine. Contact them, send them an email or host your own contest if it makes you feel better, no one here is going to stop you. But stop tainting these forums with constant negative and bashing posts. I can tell you for sure that a lot of people don't want to make maps in that kind of community.

If the winners want to come to this thread and ask what they could improve upon I would gladly help them. I didn't call them terrible maps, I called them terrible maps compared to what was entered (if I even said that). There's a MASSIVE difference between the two.

There were more deserving people, and they didn't win. We can talk about how much others should have won all we want, you coming in here and telling us otherwise only fuels us.

There is an entirely different portion of the forums that is used for helping people, and improving upon your maps. In there you will only see positive criticism, in here I can't say the same. If they come to this specific thread for criticism or think that this thread means everyone criticizes in this way, they are mistaken.

I feel personally that you should just admit you won because you were lucky with bypassing some of the rules, blizzards hidden judging process favored your map, and that there were better maps that should have won based on the criteria that blizzard asked for in the first place. Instead of blaming it on Blizzard. You've already won, no one can take that from you, so I don't get it.

There were better maps than the maps that won. They didn't win and they should have. Enough said. I'm done in this thread :)

If I wasn't on the other side of the fence, I'd say someone's having a hard time letting go!

In all seriousness though, it's been quite a few weeks since the contest submission deadline. Some might have done lots of improvements to their maps, while some haven't done anything, so it wouldn't be the same contest.

It probably would be better to simply host a new contest with clear rules and a deadline that doesn't stress people out.

That's almost like starting your map 4 months before the contest even starts. Oh wait...

I agree mostly. Rocket Arena looked well made. Photon command, although fun for a bit, was fairly boring. I bet its cuz blizzard was going for "noob friendly" like they stressed so much at blizzcon.

Exactly, I'm completely content with not winning, sure 5,000 dollars and a trip to blizzcon would have been nice, but some sort or recognition from the judges and or blizzard would have been nice. Like Progammer said, The second option doesn't exist, which is what the large majority of us had expected. If a map was to have beaten mine I wanted it to be because it was far superior to mine, a great new idea that was unheard of, a polished map that by anyones standards was over the top, a balance beyond any other, and above all... playability and fun. This is what blizzard asked for, and what they gave us via winners in return not only doesn't match this by comparison but it doesn't even make sense.

Now to clarify, I'm not trying to say the people that won did a poor job of this, or that they didn't have good ideas or that it wasn't polished. etc etc. You've already won, no one can take that from you, our beef and mine is with blizzard not you. Keep making maps and expand your ideas and your knowledge. Congratulations to you.

I think I'm going to end up just making maps for private play until the premium system is in place. Does anyone have any information about the premium map system that they talked so much about. It seems that they may have abandoned it considering the fact that I didn't hear anything about it at BlizzCon. Did anyone else hear anything?

Look, it was better than 2 of the 3 that won, and 1 of the 3 was not eligible. I'm disappointed that the winners wouldn't have beaten me. If I said otherwise I apologize, there were better maps than mine. However I think I had a good chance for 3 spots.

It would've been convenient if they gave this explanation BEFORE the contest started. I'm not someone who's a sore loser, but what I am bitter about is that these maps won plus that WASD automatically disqualified a map whenever one of the categories they used as an example was a first-person shooter, which requires WASD movement.

These are extremely careless mistakes, and makes it unfair for everyone who entered the contest...and then they ended up with pieces of bull as the winners due to having hidden criteria which directly conflicted with what they said. I, for one, have had enough with the way Blizzard has treated their mapmakers, and will waste no more time on them.

Agreed. I'm not working on maps until Premium Maps exist, and we get more then 50% of the income.

Or it could be because your map isn't as fun?

Regardless, I think Sorcerer's Defense should have won, it is, in my opinion, the best TD thus far for SC2. However, there werent that many class maps submitted it seems. No map was even close to the level of some WC3 maps, such as TKoK, Battleships or even Island Defense.

Nah I found out why it didn't win. The unstated rules of having it to be easy to play and easy to learn, then be able to be played in under 15 minutes. Nice. So the rules we tried so hard to follow are overshadowed by the simple rules they made after we submitted and never made aware to us.

    lol

So the third map is Zergling Round-Up.

That completed the custom map contest joke. Good job Blizz!

So this was my entry, and it didn't win. Why didn't it win? Because it followed blizzards rules, "new, fun, innovative, blah blah blah". What blizzard really wanted was "Simple and Accessible"

I am now cleaning up and fixing the original version of my map with advanced things that I had found after the contest, because unlike "RAD" which was deserving if it followed the rules I started the map 4 days after the contest started, and spent 10-15 hours per day learning and testing things in the editor to get what I wanted out of it. I didn't have a template, terrain, or even an idea to build upon. I created an engine, terrain, idea, polished and balanced it in less than 26 days. If I had done this for fun, I wouldn't be complaining.

Now me personally, I feel ripped off. I worked my ass off for this contest to just be basically told, "yours wasn't good enough". We decided that instead of the maps that took time and dedication, we picked simple and easy.

However, if the maps that had won had followed the rules and been worth a 5,000$ prize and trip to blizzcon, I wouldn't be complaining.

It's completely off-putting and downright depressing to know that blizzard could careless about their mappers. A mention of some of our maps at blizzcon would have been nice, I mean they did claim all rights to our maps anyways.

I had been working on a second version of the map with really clean, well everything. However because banks can still be hacked I will be postponing it until that is fixed. So I am going to implement a lot of new functions into the original, and release it as Photon Arena Round-Up.

Facility 17, Shape Wars and Cosmic Eclipse all look absolutely stunning. I didn't watch every demo vid, so don't feel like I'm snubbing you if I didn't mention your map, but if there are many more submissions as impressive as these 3, then I can't *wait* for all of 'em to get uploaded and popular on b.net. Pretty much every submission video I watched on this thread seems at least on par with the most sophisticated customs that are currently popular. I like a good tug of war map as much as the next guy, but I'm really looking forward to some polished, well-designed maps like this catching on to add some more variety to the customs scene. I hope they're hard at work on a new custom game system to solve some of the remaining problems with the popularity and lobby systems, because there are a lot of really amazing maps hitting b.net now. Keep up the good work, everyone! Us non-mapmakers appreciate your hard work :)

The second version of the map I entered into the contest, will be for battle.net consumption and should be quite popular. I polished the shit out of my entry, but it's lacking specific things pertinent to battle.nets capabilities. Such as stat saving, and the like. I'll be posting a demo of my map whenever I find out who wins/loses. If I win however, that will be left to blizzcon.

I cannot test this but I believe if you add the behavior to the weapon instead of the unit it may bypass it, cannot guarantee it however since my editor has been down for a while. Good luck.

posted a message on [Request] Information!

I was a big SC1 map maker and a lot of the newer triggers are confusing me and really getting irritated doing so, I've gone through a lot of the triggers using it's search function to get a lot of what I wanted. Anyways could the community please give me the following :)

What is the difference between a condition and an event? Do the events activate the trigger and if the conditions are met the actions happen?

Is there a way to kill ALL units in a region within one action. (Tired of 8 triggers per region to kill 8 things)

Say I have 5 lives, and control one unit. That unit dies, how would I get that unit to be recreated at a region/point, and remove a life, only if I have more than 0 lives?

I'm basically confused on how the conditions work in general it just seems to be a bunch of comparisons and coding scripts.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think this'll work out as well as it did in SC1. In fact many games that relied on hacked tile sets will probably be near unplayable now.

I've already started making "hacked" tile sets. It actually has amazing potential. The data editor is AMAZING for this.
