I would like a quick review/article that answers this: Is blizzard moving to mmorpg genre forward into the future, or perfecting the past with MoP?

posted a message on i found this on the internet in case anyone is interested.

To censor means to forbid the public distribution of some thing. If people are paying a private firm to air or talk about certain things at the expense of talking about other things, that is not censorship because they are not forbidding the airing of those things, but rather are simply not choosing to air it. They are not setting up barriers to the information.

If you are angry about what Newscorp or any other major corporation airs or does not air, buy a share, take some responsibility, go out to a shareholder meeting, and speak and be heard. Anyone who whines about "the corporations" who has not done this is, as far as I am concerned, just plain lazy. Who owns these corporations? Well, anyone with a pension, IRA, insurance, or any other investment type product probably owns shares in a telecommunication company someway. If you and a bunch of other people own shares in a mutual fund whose fund owns part of these companies, tell the mutual fund that you want them to drop the share or demand that the company do something different, or you will leave the fund.

There are all sorts of ways you can make a difference and tell senior management and the BoD to do something different, but in involves actual action, not "liking" someone's facebook or signing some worthless petition.

posted a message on Water States/Tiling Frequency Question

Hey all. I am setting up a water raise/flooding trigger. I have two water states set up, the default and the alternative. I am having an issue with the tiling frequency. Basically, I have set the default and alternative states to a lower tiling frequency of .07. I did with with the alternative state as well, but am having this problem:

The modified tiling frequency is not carrying over. So when the water switches over to the alternative states, it holds the base tiling frequency for the type of water (in this case, marsara). I want, however, that tiling frequency to carry over so that the water looks the same at either state, with the only difference being height. However with the water resetting to its default tiling frequency, this is not happening.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks, Yeti

    EDIT: Issue solved.

posted a message on Silly Question Involving Water

You can simply reduce the numbers of cells in a water texture. You really do not give up that much aesthetic wise, and you gain alot of framerates. I had made a terrain for a project involving naval combat. The map is probably 75% water, and by changing the water cell size (go to the data tab under waternot underwater :D) we greatly increased framerates.

Given that there are quite a few programmers here, you shouldn't just consider tech companies and what not only. There are many financial firms that want programmers not only for maintenance, but also to create new economic and financial models. I am leaving a link to an excellent website, not only for listing opening, but also providing advice on resumes, cover letters, and ect... (Check out the "how not to write a cover letter for an investment bank" post. Heck, there are 13 pages of openings just within IT Tech, many of which pay 100k over.

Above all, be confident in yourself, and never let the, "I won't get the job," attitude stop you. Hell, I never thought I'd land the internships I had, nor the workI have, but I did. Just stay positive.

9 to 5 office job? Sheesh I work 6-6 and come in on weekends, sometimes longer depending on my clients needs.

Edit: I should add that I freaking love my job.

    @Sandman

It turns out that players in Asia do not play monthly fees! They, in fact, pay by the hour. I did not know this before. I suppose you learn something new everyday. Looking at their financial statements, man, Blizzard's income has taken some hits. You can find their statements online via any financial webpage (eg: yahoo finance). Ticker name is ATVI (if you look at share prices over a 5 year period, keep in mind that there was a stock split sometime back).

On the flip side, Blizzard can rebound, and I hope they do. A quick look at their webpage suggests that they are actively seeking talent (maybe some of the modders here can apply!), and, of course, leadership can, and will, be ousted if the share price continues to under preform.

Wonder when they're going to have to call in Boston Group. Sheesh, loosing 2 million subscribers to WoW (not going to calculate the present value of that loss) and turnover in senior design positions, in addition to failing to meet analyst's projected earning, I have a feeling they'll be calling BGC in soon. It's too bad.

If you can hack the starcraft 2 editor and program from the ground up an editor that creates large maps, why not make a better editor from scratch?

posted a message on 1 Year of Starcraft. What Blizz brought to us...

If you all don't like it, don't buy another game by Blizzard, and purchase shares in ATVI and use your vote to vote out the current management. They have no legal obligation to us. They do have an obligation to make profit. You can tell them they are going in the wrong direction by not purchasing their next game. You can also, has a shareholder, enjoy the legal obligation they have to you: increase the value of their equity. If you think they are not doing that, by producing products which you think most people think suck, then vote for new management.

posted a message on [Texture] How-To: Optimizing WoW Textures for SC2 [Intermediate]

Great post. This will be very helpful to mappers, like myself and my friend Delirium, who have used WoW models before. Using optimizing, Delirium was able to reduce the size of one of our maps, due to wow imports, by almost 60%.

posted a message on Need help from a terrainer.

Best way to get good at making terrains: Make lots of terrains. I've authored about 6 published cortex terrains. Looking at them, from first to last, I can see a steady improvement in my own skill and style. The nice thing about starting with cortex terrains is how much freedom you get to have as a terrainer. No, you don't learn important things like terrain balance between fractions as quickly, but you have free reign to experiment. Finally, you end up having to learn the basics of imports, triggers, publishing, and even data, to get your map on bnet; all of these things are essential, I think, to being not just a good terrainer, but a good mapmaker in general.

Anyways, this project will look great. I've seen DrHu's UI work before, and it is stunning.
