im stealing an idea from an original starcraft custom game. but im building it up from scratch. is that stealing? (Coincidentally, since im also using it to learn map making im using all the original unit values for now:})
there is a great hero selection tool sort of what your describing in the assets section of this site. its there for people to use, but if you desire to make your own, then good luck!. and that is by no means a noob question
Try making a leader board from scratch.
ill try and give what little i know tho (but i might be wrong)
variables is just another name for information. variables store information (specific to the type of variable you use)
so its important that you use the right variable for what your trying to store.
Boolean's, store only the state of "true" or "false".
Real stores something that is a real number. a "real" integer lets you store unit health / energy of a unit among other things. its best to see all the options for yourself (make a global variable for each type of variable. make a trigger that sets a variable and see the options for all the different variables types.
strings can store letters or numbers (useful for a lot of things).
most of the other variables are easy to figure out. they just store the data type they are named after.
constant means it never changes.
array means it can store more than one number for the same data type.
you would do that for every player in the game. changing the index to the appropriate player number. each index can store a different number. (also note the array index has nothing to do with players. it can be used for any purpose)
the purpose of that trigger, is i can call [player number] and depending on the index i ask for, it will return a 1 or a 0. 1 means they are in the game, 0 means they are not. but thats just one use.
theres so much to say about variables its best to just ask questions. so ill try to answer any you have.
but seriously. try and make a leader board and have it display kills / health / anything else. the more you add the more you'll learn(but you will learn the hard way ;[). you will learn a lot of basics

set a "real" variable = triggering damage amount

what is the trigger supposed to do? i could make an example trigger, but its hard to use the right context w/o knowing

change the 'resource amount bonus' in the gather ability. (it adds the amount to the resource amount declared by the node)
0
a work around could be to give it the ability to start, and disable / hide it until he should have it

@Chamenas: Go
in the campaign they use the 'food of a thousand feasts' so maybe thats the only way.

edit: misread something

In the communities opinion. what do you think the best length an entire custom game should last to keep it interesting / re playable?
