    posted a message on An annoying trend within the SC2 mapping community

    @BlinkHawk: Go

    Well, instead of just sharing how it was done he told people to dump the list from the sc2 executable and then he started talking about where you could track it back from. He could have typed out the function name he used on a single line instead of making 4-5 people waste their time digging through the sc2 executable to try to find it.

    @vjeux: Go

    Well I would suggest maybe writing up an article about why sharing discoveries is important and how it helps the community and progress. As we can't force people to share their discoveries we could maybe convince them by linking them to an article explaining why they should share. I'd be happy to help write up a first draft for such an article if you think this is a good idea.

    posted a message on An annoying trend within the SC2 mapping community

    I lurk on these forums a lot and I've noticed one really annoying trend among many SC2 mappers, they don't share their editor discoveries. Far to often do I see threads like this or an even better example here.

    I think this trend is extremely annoying and detrimental for the whole community. And here is a short list of some reason from the top of my head of why this is bad,

    • It halts progress, the community would move forward a lot faster if we all could share and build on each others ideas.
    • The person who originally discovers it is not going to get credit for it if they do not reveal how it is done, once someone else discovers it and reveals it they get the credit.
    • It is quite rude and selfish as I am sure everyone in this community have learned something from other people in the community through tutorials, forum posts or simply going through map files. So why not give something back to the community?

    Now I am not saying that people should share everything they make, merely that new concepts and methods of doing things should be shared for the greater good. If you create a cool system then by all means don't release the source map, but if you are going to post a bragging video of your new cool map system then at the very least give out the general idea of how you do things. If the idea is not shared we just end up with lots of people trying to replicate it (and they will manage eventually) instead of spending their time on doing further research and discoveries.

    I will keep this post short, it is late right now and I just rambled down these thoughts as I've seen this trend a lot lately and I really don't like that the community is heading in this direction.

    posted a message on TMA Community searching for new map creator

    One thing that I am wondering is if you want a straight copy of the original map or if you would give the map creator the freedom to perhaps improve on the map now that we have the ability to do more advanced things compared to SC1. For instance the whole method of selecting units by using beacons and selector unit is kind of out dated. The new dialog system, an upgrade menu or a wc3 style shop system are all superior ways of doing it (as they require less space and allows for more flexibility).

    Anyway I got my own project going so I don't have time to do it but figured it might be something you want to consider.

    Indeed, Element TD was wicked for WC3. Hope to see some interesting new changes when it comes out for SC2.

    Neat map, you should extend it to a complete plants vs zombies clone. Anyway I have a request, would you mind making a tutorial on how you made your ball launcher attack? I am sure many people would find that useful, at least I would.

    I love the style you got there, looks neat. Would be fun if someone took the time to make a spore type of game (just make it better than spore as it was booooring in the endgame).

    Now this is not a contest entry but I actually won my beta key by making something similar in a contest for gamereplays.org. Maybe it can serve as an inspiration to people for some minigame ideas.

    http://beider.org/gamereplays/competition/

    It's like wario ware but for sc2 (but made in flash).

    Nice tutorial as always OneTwo.

    Kildare88,

    There might be something you can do with Events+ on the shop to make it disable it's buttons or not show the buy buttons for units with a full inventory.

    Optionally you could put a region around your shop and then check if the unit has free inventory space when it enters the region / periodically when it is inside the region and do something based on that (Like making the player unable to select the shop or whatever)

    posted a message on Blizzard has lost it

    Personally I think as long as they don't make this change retroactive it is fine. If they don't show real name for any posts created before this change goes live I don't really see a problem with it. Once you know that your real name gets stuck up there with whatever you post, most people are going to post more serious replies. At least those of us who realize that most employers will google your name.

    So yeah, I don't mind this change. Even if it is a retroactive change the only thing I've posted on the official forums is constructive posts, so I'm fine with it, but I can see why other people might not be so happy about it.

    It seems like this map will go nowhere near popular. I'm sorry to say this but to be critical, players tend to like map that have easy learnability, simple concept, and lasts no longer than 45 mins. I like the idea, the technicality is very spectacular, you are obviously a very skilled programer, but I'm afraid the game concept does not work. If this map gets finnished, only a few skilled programers and mapmakers will play this map. You got to make the game concept simpler in general and design something that would give players the ability to strategize their gameplays with numerous possibilities.

    I have expirience in wc3 modding and many maps with very cool, fascinating, but complex concept goes nowhere...

    I did not intend for this map to be the most popular or awesome map on b.net. I made it for two reasons,
    1) to check/show off what is possible in the galaxy editor
    2) because I really enjoy these kinds of games even if I only got 100 other people who want to play it with me.

    If everyone just made games that they thought would be the next big thing on b.net there wouldn't be many fun and original maps out there, just dota clones. Maybe I will make a dumbed down version at some point where the programming part is simpler, but I have no plans on doing that at this point.

    @7H3LaughingMan: Go

    While I agree that this is neat you should be careful with this. I suspect blizzard will be harder on use of copyrighted material in their maps now that they have more control over what is hosted. They are liable to be sued based on the content used unless they remove maps with copyrighted content from their servers upon request.

    Quote from decltype: Go

    That's really neat! Did you consider the possibility of implementing a full-fledged interpreter? It's not feasible perhaps...

    Oh, and you sound Norwegian... ;)

    A complete interpreter would be a pain to write, I am simply writing the commands I need for my map. Also I am Norwegian.

    Quote from tigerija: Go

    1 word. Epic.

    Now you can expand this by awarding each player with lets say team of 5 bots(if bot is unit) and you can program your team and bots. And make them fight in arena or something. With feature to save your bots or even saving few of your teams. Just an idea. I hope I got this concept right...

    I already have plans to do something like that. I will release more info once I got further with the map.

    posted a message on [WIP] BattleBots (ingame scripting language)

    What am I showing off
    So here is another UI demo of my battlebots project, this time I am showing off the first version of my ingame scripting language. This project might (if I can motivate myself enough) have a playable alpha version out when b.net comes up again. I will also be looking for an icon artist at some point in the future so if this is a project you find interesting and you like doing icons then contact me (Need icons for weapons/abilities/parts/etc..)

    What is this game about
    The general premise of the game is that you buy a bots and parts and put them together. Then you can program the behavior for your bot and fight against other players bots and in tournaments against NPC bots. Winning more cash and earning experience allowing you to buy better bots and more advanced equipment. The plan is to have a career mode so your progress is saved between plays.

    If you are interested in seeing my old shop system demo you can check that one out below.
