Maybe by exporting in .fbx, that is what I do when I work in mudbox (autodesk's zbrush-like program). I make a model in mudbox and then i export it as a fbx format so it can be used in maya/3dsmax.

I do not know if you can export in fbx with zbrush though.

He's using blender, not zbrush. And yes, blender supports fbx, although collada (.dae) is a better industry standard, and he'd be better off using dae. Which, yes, blender can export.

You can get a free copy of max if you're studying and use it only for educational noncommercial purposes, which this would count as. Go to http://students.autodesk.com and register to get a copy.

And if you want to use free software that's also powerful you should be using blender; it's the only free 3d modeling program that's up with the big boys (max, maya, Softimage xsi, c4d, and houdini). There is truespace but the free versions are a bit outdated as I understand it.

For some reason all the models included in that mod generate an error when importing them, no matter how I do it. The one I gave to you was converted and THEN imported, but that didn't include animations. So basically I don't know how to get it to work; I could get other WC3 models working just fine, however.

Try http://www.udmod.com/downloads.php?do=download&fileid=22 but I think the animations won't work. I haven't tested it in sc2 yet. Make sure you import the texture first, place it in /Assets/Textures/, then save, restart editor, and THEN import the model.

posted a message on 3DSMAX Copy animation throughout the entire sequence?

You should be posing your character at keyframes and max should generate the animation based off those key poses. I'd explain how but I don't use max for anything but conversions.

Manually doing a new pose each frame is NOT how it's done ;0

posted a message on How was the Custom Map Scene at this Point in WC3?

The problem with the popularity system is not the most popular maps get made popular thing, it's how hard it is for niche groups o players to find maps that they like, and add more players to their numbers. The majority of players play the first page or two of maps and that's it. With the old map list, people could see a diplo or a pacman or some other map which, while not immensely popular, appealed to a small group of players. But now you can't grow your userbase without making a map popular, and niche maps will never get popular, which means there's a vicious cycle in which niche map players shrink instead of grow.

I'll try it as soon a possible. Very thanks. I have 0 experience on models. Is this program hard? My only little experience is on Warcraft 3 models (some geoset merging, vertex modify etc...)

I personally dislike the interface and workflow of it, but if all you want to do is convert models, it's fine. The difficulty comes when your conversion doesn't work and you have to know modeling to fix your problem ;0

I wonder if, in some fashion, the fact that this is a Starcraft game limits the custom scene at all. I almost feel like the units and world of WC3 lent themselves more easily to new worlds and stories. While with SCII, the places you can take your map with it still being believable are relatively limited.

You clearly haven't played much Starcraft 1 or brood war. There were zombie maps, fantasy RPGs, turn based strategy, a diablo 1 remake, all your usual dodges, run zling runs, defences, naruto, dragonballz, super smash brothers, and way more. Sure, you had to use your imagination a little more for the fantasy maps, but you'd have to use your imagination a heap to have space stations in WCIII.

No, I'd say that the popularity system is the single worst thing that is killing the custom mapping scene. Sure the data editor is gay and all, but that in itself only deters a few people. But what deters many people is that their maps probably won't get ayed unless they can get them on the top three pages rapidly.

I'll give conversion a go when I have time.

You need 3ds max, 2010 or later. It costs a few thousand, but you can grab a student edition for free as long as you won't use it for commercial products. Then download http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/m3-export-plugin-3ds-max/ and install it according to the readme. You then should be able to import your firebat into max, and export it as an m3. This is what I'll be attempting as well, but you're welcome to give it a go.

You need to use NiNToxicated's m3 import/export + his included MDX importer exporter. If you post a link to the firebat model I'll give it a go myself.

The video tutorial I am refering to had alot of swearing at the editor and it not working correctly. At the end they eventually made a blue diffuse skinned hydralisk after over 30 mins of tutorial.

Either way it is discovered and nearly mastered and anyone can do it.

Yeah that's Mud's tutorial which I asked him to do. And it was 4 minutes of tutorial ;0 he didn't really want to make the vid which is why there was the swearing.

Just want to make sure he's properly credited ;0

DrSuperEvil, is DSG honestly your brother? You both have a similar posting style and habits online from what I can see, and my brother...doesn't.

Incidentally the first person to do this successfully outside of blizzard was PSGMud; I'm guessing that http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/starcraft-ii-editor-help-zone-647/changing-model-textures-192891/ is where DrSuperEvil got his info (plus some testing of his own I assume :0). The credits should probably include mud as well.

DDS files should be saved as DXT5 if they have an alpha map; DXT3 if they don't. If you're not sure just use DXT5 as the difference in file size is insignificant. Mipmaps don't need to e generated as SC2 generates them itself. Oh, and make sure your texture resolution is a multiple of four or you can't use compression on it.

That would be making it illegal to VIEW said material. If someone from another country hosts the material and an american views it, the american has done nothing wrong (according to the proposed law). ISPs who allow copyrighted material to be access by their customers would also not be breaking the law, unless a specific clause mentions them. Only if an american uploads or streams copyrighted material would there be a breaking of the law.

You can't (or shouldn't be able to) prosecute people living in another country. Maybe if they commited an act of war, but otherwise it depends on the local law. If youtube was hosted in new zealand instead of america, all the USA could do is put pressure on NZ to pass laws which would then make google criminals; google would then move youtube elsewhere.

I can't see this as something the US government can win. Not nowadays.

Like what? People in the US would get slightly slower youtube videos than normal, that's all.

Everyone would just move their servers to japan and korea and new zealand and other countries without those restrictions.
