windex, this is an issue i have encountered a few times... the EASIEST way to fix it, is to select EACH side of the wall (that means front back top bottom left and right) and detaching each side separately.when you export the shading should look right. if you look ad halral's latest "random dungeon generator" i made the wall model for him and it took me a bit to get the lighting right.
that took me about 5 minutes but shows what i mean.
here's the trick i use for "smoothing" with sc2. you select the polygons you want in that smoothing group. you DETACH them. then put a smoothing group on those polies.
i'm not sure they would show up correctly in a render (i don't render too often). I just know that when you import a model, it has the correct settings for ingame. i use that to base my new models off off.

do the high poly one, then do a low poly one based on it. you can then do a normal map from the high poly one.

import one of the "ChainLinkFenceStraight" doodads. take a look at it's material. it should tell you how it's done ;)

there IS a fence doodad... it should be using the transparency... i'll check it out..
also downloading the new exporter now!
(no download yet)..
i looked at the fence straight doodad and it exports correctly. are you using an alpha map, sc2 bitmap, with use alpha only checked?

he's SUGGESTING blender, as a free modelling program. you can pretty easily get a model from blender to 3ds max which is used to get models in sc2 ;)

if he could make it look more 80's other than just alot of noise, it'd be perfect
