Please ignore my other RPG post, this is the way better one. I believe I can do way more with this too, but I was too lazy to kill the other forum. Anyway, I am not sure if this can be done but please hear me out.
Many planets have (or should have) quite a few different areas that have been made differently, so they look different. I already have 1 decent terrainer who is willing to jump on board and give me some ideas. Now here is the good part, I already have ideas!!! I am normally N.O.T. the idea guy, so I don't get too motivated over the random junk that rots in my brain. However, this time is different, I swear it is, and I will prove it.
Multiple terrains connected by a single game wound up into either a huge plot line, or an MMO if at all possible, with features like chosing your path for the story to follow. You get to pick your unit (character selection), and go about your business of creating a life for yourself on Tarsonis. I want the gameplay to resemble a pokemonish style with, like I said, different areas that you "travel" to. There could be a war going on in one sector, prisoners to rescue in another, races with prizes (special equipment or credits or something) in a special zone, even possibly a backwater town with an arcade or bar for kicks, lol. I was thinking about minigames like space invaders, or something that resembles Blizzards "Lost Viking" anyway, so it would be a perfect way to include them!
So far, the map really has no exact point, but most MMOish games don't, except leveling up and unlocking more areas in some way shape or form.
Some of the ideas I have come up with are things such as: minigames like space invaders, some form of player vs player dueling, a high stakes storyline where your choices can become fatal and helping the locals with some form of job for rewards.
It is too bad that only a max of 16 (I think) people can play in every game, or this would probably be the coolest senerio there ever was. I do not want to brag, but I want to give myself a pat on the back (pat, pat) and a thank you to my brain (I love you head of mine) for such an amazing idea.
If you're going to do something on this scale, I would recommend making it a single player/offline rpg (where you can easily save), as you cannot link maps on battle.net. The average person will spend 15 minutes playing so you have to hook them in that time span. Focus on making the core combat unique, and not just SCII with one unit and a bunch of hostiles. A good storyline will help make it immersive and give it direction, as opposed to an mmo or open rpg. Anyways, best of luck!
Well I got another guy interested and we may end up making a team hor a hybrid idea of his/mine and make it multiplayer. Too bad I can't link maps, or it would halp him too.
