Seeing it in action for some time now, I feel like the system is a little misplaced here in the forums.
From what I understand, it is supposed to mainly be an indicator, how helpful/trusted a person is and how most likely the quality of information you receive from him will be; after all this is mainly a mapping platform and a major source of mapping information and help.
However, if someone posts a funny picture in some thread in general chat or offtopic, many people will see it, some of them will think its funny, and some of them will like the post. So this picture receives maybe 5 to 10 likes.
If someone however answer a question in the mapping forums, he will usually receive 0 to 1 likes instead. Even if the information he provided is amazing with like detailed background, research, possible sideeffects and solutions etc ect. he will still receive a maximum of 1 like by the person he helped (if that person actually knows and cares about the like function). And noone will browse the forums and search for helpful posts to like them or something. Maybe if someone has the exact same problem and finds the thread later on you wil receive another one.
So if it is actually designed to provide an estimate of post quality for mapping-related posts, it doesn't work. Just look at my reputation: Half of it is from the very first post in this thread; even though I am sure, I provided some helpful information in the meantime. I could have just made another post like that one, maybe with a funny video or something and be at the same reputation without actually providing a single bit of helpful information or whatever.
And so I actually wrote another lengthy post about this, even though, I claim not to care about it. Maybe I do care, after all... whatever ;)
yeah, but I hate Rep and Like wars... they plague forums
I only frequented forums without those features before. I guess, we will see, how it goes. Lets hope, it does, what it is intended to do most likely: Motivate people to create informative posts of great quality.
Honestly, I don't care about my own reputation at all. Just like the post count, it will sort of build up over time. Just another number on the profile.
€ Oh well, my first post contradicts this statement big time xD. I just made it for fun, though
I disagree, this helps with identifying good and solid information over someone trashtalking.
However, I would honestly rather +rep the guy who posted instead of liking the post itself, so for future posts people can see, who already contributed to the community.
€ just looked at the left side, and there is reputation as well, it seems. I assume, it is tied to the "like" - button?

I like, how my post ranting about how useless likes are, received 2 likes >.<

Yes, 2 likes for the post, 2 rep for me. Seems to work that way.
Just how bad was it? xD
