They are not models, rather sprites. The difference is that they are purely 2D and as such have limited correct viewing angles. This means they will be out of place next to SC2 model content.
It is still possible to use them to some extent however. This can be seen in the mod CarBot animations is making where all melee units are replaced with cartoon drawn sprites. I am unsure of the actual mechanics but I believe it uses special dummy billboard models and some complex actor events.
Do note that the sprites used by SC1 were created by pre-rendering models. In theory one could port such models to SC2 however such models were never really released to the public, were not designed for direct use in a game and likely look far worse than you would hope. I would recommend sticking with the StarCraft II versions of units where possible as ultimately they are probably the best.
