Squadron TD is a remake of legion TD from war3, which is still played to this date, its not that good because its just been released and they are still working on all the races. I still go back to war3 to play Legion TD. It was and still is a good TD, however I don't like squadron TD because I think they released it to early before enough races were ready. Everyone playing one race is lame.... But as long as the mapmaker is decent this will better from future releases
TD's are popular no matter what you say, but the big thing in the TD category is the easy to understand and balance. If its to complicated people will not want to play it and if its not balanced, where you need that one
I will take a look into maelstrom TD later
@zeldarules28: Go That is so not true. Certain maps will always have their fan base, its just the custom game system which puts the popular ones at top which sucks, You can't have TD's which require certain number of players if yours is not popular, your game just won't start untill it is popular, having a game where you play as an independent is going to work out for you so much better. as the fans can keep playing it without a full lobby.
If you took a okay-ish map and threw it to the #1 spot in popularity, it would not be overcome by another map of the same genera thats better. Maybe its just me, then, but I can't see tower defense maps as being super fun and popular. Either way definitely make a trailer, its going to help for sure.

So according to you, the beginning good TD's that were made in war3, would never have been replaced by the better designed ones 1-5 years later? I don't think so. TD's are one of those things that go in and out you play them for a bit they are addicting for a while they go out. New ones catch you attention you play them for a while then a new one comes out you play it. Its a cycle. Its not a case of a favourite one. I'm going to agree with karawasa on this one....
@RCIX: Go
Allright having just attempted to play this. here are my concerns.
1. First of all I would classify this as a TD war not a TD. you aren't fighting waves of creeps, you have to send creeps to each other, I got the wrong impression of the game before even starting, and because nobody was in the lobby to play with I didn't really "play"
2. Popularity and TD war games are even harder to start, as I said in my last post you have to have people to play with, which sucks....
3. TD war's are generally very newb unfriendly, and being beaten quickly by someone that knows what they are doing can put people off playing again very quickly.
4. It took me ages to realise I had a creep sending sub-menu, there is no explanation of how the game works other than someones realisation its a TD war game.
Your game looks like it may have potential to climb the popularity lists but, you may want to look at building an AI for computer so that people don't have to wait for a lobby to fill to play the game, because that is not likely going to happen. Advertising will help, but your going to have to put a fair bit of work into it to get it recognized, ideally I can't comment on the gameplay itself as I didn't get a chance to really play it.
i love TDs. think they are a unique form of gameplay...
having said that, there needs to be some new life into them. i have played Maelstrom TD and although it is confusing, it is fun. (please don't mistake my saying it's confusing as permission to put in a cinematic in the beginning. people just need to play it enough to get it.)
also, you're going to have to be patient in order for your map to get recognized. and give it some time for people to appreciate it and actually play it.
keep in mind that advertising is only going to work with the people who are drawn to it. this is not a demographics thing; this is a will-they-even-go-looking-for-advertisements thing. personally, i do not go looking for advertisements. i just log in and see what's on the lists.
i'm working on my TD now. it sucks. but i'm trying to bring some old school stuff into it. not old TD stuff, but old game stuff. ever play Desktop Tower Defense? yeah, like that stuff. score, time-based macroing... stuff like that. i'm thinking Atari games here, folks. when score mattered...
good luck getting yours recognized. i'd like something other than Vexal TD and that crappy game squadron td... hate that game...
It's not my fault it took this long for other TD maps to become popular...
I put as little effort into my map as possible. It looks like to me that other developers just aren't trying. The recently popular map is a clone of a map that was already made.
>.< I guess its just me. Karawasa is probably right, I've been over exposed to poorly made TD's. Whatever. My opinion that a video would be great for your popularity still stands, though.
Despite your creepy-ass avatar I'm with you on this. I had some fun playing sorcerer's TD awhile back, but 99% of the time, I can't imagine wanting to play a TD (or TD war for that matter~ may as well be a lame tug game, no matter how shiny it is).
I swear you guys could come up with more fun/inventive things if you tried. And I'm not talking about Debate-like-nonsense. I mean legitimate galaxy-editor worthy maps.

oh i love your TD. but since you are working on new projects and are not planning on updating yours until that is done, we need some new ones. also, we need a solo TD. team based TDs are annoying with all the bad parenting out there making people leave games. or... making bots so their maps can get popular. not saying YOU use bots. just saying...
I don't even know how to use bots, nor would I find it feasible. Wouldn't you need a separate account for each bot? That'd be.... 600$ for 10 players? 1200$ if you wanted 2 games going at once?
And, my TD does have a solo mode. It just doesn't work at all.

1. Will a rename to Maelstrom Tower Wars help?
2. I'm also considering maybe making a special "TD" mode where it actually is a TD and the goal is to get the most amount of kills before you die or something. I may not be able to do that (see below), but i might be able to get someone to help me there.
3. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about that, as that's the case with most competitive games. I have an idea for a mechanic though that might give newer players a bit of a chance (plus i need a way for players to eventually be able to beat each other, which would be my main reason for adding it).
4. The tips (and not only do i put up tips, a slap up a chat message asking new players to read them) mention building towers plus sending creeps from your builder. Is this not clear enough?
I fully understand that the TD and tower wars genre is pretty saturated. I figure that if I make a decent enough map and put effort into advertising it though, then people might start to regularly play it.
So overall here are the suggestions I got:
1. Make a video and ask for it to be front-paged(?)
2. Come up with a concise description of what makes your map special
3. Make sure you have good, short tutorials for people to learn
I'd add bots if I could, but 2 problems are in the way:
1. I don't even know where to start
2. I'm hitting a pretty solid wall in terms of time spent on this project; I really need to move on soon (though I'll still be able to do "maintenance" stuff).
It's not my fault it took this long for other TD maps to become popular...

I was thinking the same thing. I know I have yet to offer my solution to this dilemma but I'm a bit surprised nothing better has cropped up yet.
I know there's an insult in there somewhere, but I stand my statement, "it was just a warm-up map".
When you find it let me know, as I'm still looking for it. My post was a lament regarding the current state of TDs. In other words, how come nothing better than a warm-up map started around launch has shown up yet?
I worked hard on making a map. Gave it nice terrain, some interesting
gameplay, etc. and now when I go to advertise it, almost *no one* is
interested in playing it.
Now you understand how much I suffer with Debates. :)

It's definitely just you. Problem here is you've acquired a bias due to exposure to a plethora of crappy TDs.

hmm but is rcix map like green td or you gonna get peoples hops up by calling it green td and serve them something different
