Hey guys. I'm not sure where to put this thread, so if it belongs elsewhere, feel free to move it.
I'd like some feedback from people on passive ability displays. Generally, in a game with the warcraft/starcraft layout (or any other applicable game layout for that matter), do you like to have icons/descriptions of all your current passive abilities? Do you like having all passive-related information onscreen so you can easily remind yourself what upgrades/abilities you have at your disposal, or do you prefer a less cluttered UI?
I'm asking because my current project has a ton of passive abilities in it (each gained through an upgrade). I'm wondering if I need to put icons for each on unit command cards (a bigger pain than you'd think for my game...it's a little unusual), or if a simple writeup of the passive boost in the upgrade tooltip is enough. A good example of this would be the Void Rays prismatic beam. It has an icon and writeup in the command card, but how often do you actually read it?
Well, as long as you have SOME way of looking up all those passives (not just the upgrade, before you are researching it, but also at your disposal, when you want to look it up after the upgrade was finished), it should be okay. You could probably use the help menu for that.
However, having all the passive abilities available on the unit makes the game appear more polished. If it messes up the UI, you could move passives to another command card.
So conclusion: Not absolutely needed, but definitely nice to have.
as for me i like to see what each does in its on ability icon. if it was me i would make a whole passive ability command card so the user can click go to submenu and be able to see all the passives it has...my opinion
