I have an ability that is orbiting an enemy unit in front on the caster. That means that the ability can be cast without having to choose a target. But if one cast it on nothing, it's a wasted 90s cooldown...
Is there a way to add the cooldown only if the Search area effect hits one or more unit(s) ? (And why not, the same with energy)
Maybe a second ability that do the real effect, and is triggered by an Issue order effect ?
Not sure whether this would work and/or is possible at all, but try adding an Enumerate Area validator to your search that checks for targets - Abilities usually give you the invalid target message if the first effects validator fails, thereby preventing the ability from actually being cast. Not sure whether this would work with a search and enumerate area, and whether the validator could actually check the targetted area.

The Modify Unit effect can adjust cooldown status.
