StarCraft: Mass Recall
StarCraft: Mass Recall (SCMR) is a project that recreates the classic StarCraft and Brood War gameplay as well as the entire single-player campaigns within the StarCraft II engine. StarCraft: Mass Recall contains 68 maps, 59 from the original StarCraft/Brood War game, 3 that were hidden or deleted on various StarCraft supports, and 6 from the 1998 demo campaign.
You need to have StarCraft II installed in order to play the Mod. StarCraft II is free-to-play, you can download the game client from the StarCraft II Official Game Site.

FRIENDLY DISCLAIMER: This Mod and all campaign files are free. This means, all who work on Mass Recall are putting their free time into an incredibly comprehensive remaster of all of StarCraft and Brood War, including entirely new custom campaigns such as the Stukov Series and Enslavers Redux. Thus, there should be absolutely no expectations that bug fixes or new features will be released in any sort of timely manner. This is a "we'll get to it when we get to it" situation. Please be aware the modders here have work lives, family lives, and simply do not have the energy to maintain a lively work cycle to keep the Mod 100% up to date. We do promise we will release updates when we feel they are ready to be released. We hope that you understand our position on this.

Installation
“Uh... how do you work this damn thing?” – Marine
Auto-Installation
(for Windows, if you're using Mac follow the manual installation guide below)
For a fresh auto-install please carefully follow these steps:
1. Download the SCMR installer and the required files (see the "Downloads" section above).
2. Move all downloaded ZIP-Files and unzip the installer to your StarCraft II installation directory. The default path to it is: "C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II\".
3. Run the installer.
4. After SCMR is successfully installed, use the shortcut on your Desktop to run SCMR.
Auto install video guide by DeltronLive
Note that this is for an older version, just make sure you have all the latest required files specified in the "Downloads" section above, otherwise the process is the same.
Manual Installation
If auto-install fails and/or you would like to manually install SCMR, please carefully follow these steps:
1. Download the required file sets (see the "Downloads" section above). For StarCraft: Mass Recall to work properly you need to download the Campaign Maps - that are bundled with the Main Mod (SCMRmod) and a "dummy" Cinematics Mod (SCMRcinematics) - as well as the Assets Mod (SCMRassets) and a Localization Mod (SCMRlocal).
2. Then extract all ZIP-Files to a folder of your choice. The extracted folder should look like graphic [1] below.
3. Now, open your StarCraft II installation directory where the StarCraft II.exe (WIN) or .app (MAC) is located. Per default this is on your primary C: drive under "Program Files (x86)" (WIN) or "Applications" (MAC). The standard paths to the StarCraft II installation directory are shown below.
Windows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II"
Mac OSX: "Macintosh HD/Applications/StarCraft II"
The StarCraft II installation directory should look similar to graphic [2] below. Note that you may need to create the "Maps" folder here if it does not already exist. Then move the folder called "Starcraft Mass Recall" (with lowercase "c") from the extracted folder to the "Maps" folder within your StarCraft II installation directory. The "Maps" folder should now look like graphic [3] below.
4. Next, move the "Mods" folder from the extracted folder into the StarCraft II installation directory (the same place as the "Maps" folder). Your "Mods" folder should now have four Mod files and resemble graphic [4] above.
5. While your newly placed "Starcraft Mass Recall" folder within the "Maps" folder should now look like graphic [5] below.
Other (older) manual installation guides:
- Step-by-step Installation Guide (English)
- Installations-Handbuch (Deutsch)
Alternative ways to play
If the above doesn't work for you, first and foremost make sure that:
- you have all the necessary files in the right directories
- you've set the correct paths for the shortcut
- you're running the latest version of StarCraft II
Alternative way to play without the shortcut:
- locate SC2Switcher.exe in the Support folder (your StarCraft II installation directory)/Support
- locate the SCMR Campaign Launcher file in (your StarCraft II installation directory)/Maps/Starcraft Mass Recall
- drag and drop the SCMR Campaign Launcher file to SC2Switcher.exe
If you wish to play while logged on to Battle.net, you will need to take the following steps:
- Launch StarCraft II using the Battle.net launcher
- Alt-tab to Desktop
- Launch StarCraft: Mass Recall using the created shortcut
Note that you can still save and load any SCMR map, as long as you're logged in.
Bonus Campaign - Enslavers Redux Installation
ZIP Download - https://www.sc2mapster.com/projects/starcraft-mass-recall/files/3246278
This file includes a new 30-mission extra bonus campaign "Enslavers Redux" by OmegaWeaponX! This series contains 4 episodes, with 9 unique maps per Terran, Protoss, and Zerg races, with 3 epilogue maps. Content and story is based on the original Enslavers custom maps in StarCraft and Dark Vengeance maps in Brood War. Features brand new dialog and story, missions, and enhanced heroes with their own level-up mechanics! Learn what happens between the major StarCraft episodes and the events leading up to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty!
While this custom campaign can be played stand-alone by opening up the unique Enslavers Redux Campaign Launcher and launching missions from there, it is also integrated into Mass Recall via the "Extras" menu. In order to load it properly in for the Mass Recall Launcher to work with this campaign, follow these instructions:
- Download the above ZIP-file containing Enslavers Redux
- Go into your StarCraft II folder -> SCMR Mass Recall -> Extras:
- Within Extras, place your ZIP-file, then uncompress it there. You should have a folder that says 8. Enslavers Redux. It should look like this now:
- You've got Enslavers Redux installed! Now from the SCMR Campaign Launcher go to Extras and click on the Enslavers Redux menu panel. You can launch any mission from here or open the Enslavers Redux Campaign Launcher and launch missions from there!
Please note - This campaign has no unique audio for voices and as such it is required that subtitles are enabled in order to actually read what transmissions are saying :)

Troubleshooting
“I swear it's always some damn thing.” – Joeyray
Make sure to check out the auto install and manual install video guides also linked above. The end result in these videos is the same, regardless of install method.
Also make sure you're using an up-to-date version of StarCraft II.
Common issues:
- Param/Value/-Error: If lots of texts are like that, you may have a problem with your Mods: Delete SCMRmod and SCMRlocal, and re-download them from the links above. If it is only one or two lines (say, a mission objective), report it in the comments section (in that case, please specify which language you are playing in).
- Dependency cannot be loaded: The Mods are not at the proper place. Check that you have put your Mods (SCMRmod, SCMRassets and SCMRlocal) in the "Mods" folder, as on the pictures above.
- Unable to load map: Your Maps are not at the proper place. Check that you have put the episode files such as "1. Rebel Yell" in a folder "Starcraft Mass Recall", itself to be placed in "Maps", as on the pictures above.

sorry if it's not good the thing i would ask...
I have starter edition and cannot use the map editor "test document" option... Can anyone upload to me your savegame from SCMRsetup? i cannot load that and i want to play your mod :/
plz help me... and sorry if my english is bad, i speak spanish
I have removed all 5.2 files. I installed v 5.3 flawlessly, I added the Cinematic package too. I think the PDF file of version 5.2 I always kept near me (installation guide) should be updated to include the Cinematic pack which by the way should be included by default to version 5.3.
i played the six 1st scenarios of Rebel Yell (1st Terran campaign) at easy settings. I won without problem so far. Maybe the easy mode is a little too easy now but please keep it that way, it is perfect for casual players. Good players will select normal or hard difficulty settings.
What is "Display Ratio" supposed to control in the options menu? Regular gameplay or the cinematics? In any case it doesn't seem affect anything and the cinematics are slightly stretched (I'm running it at 1920x1200) with any option available.
I'm having trouble getting maps to play. Version 5.2 worked fine and I updated to 5.3 by simply overwriting what was there. Redid the set-up process but I can't open any maps the game just freezes up and all I see is the screen with stars. I don't get an error message or nothing. I tried starting the installation from scratch to see if that would work but i'm still getting the same thing. I am using the retro mod.
@Koranis79: Go
I think it is enoough to replace the mod file. There is no need for a new installation
@Telenil: Go
Thank you for all your efforts and don't worry about bugs. To answer your question: yes, I've tried both with subtitles ON and OFF and it doesn't seem to affect the cinematics.
EDIT: Do I have to repeat the entire installation procedure or is it enough to simply overwrite the previous 5.3 mod with the most recent?
'frantically re-uploads the mod'
Version 5.3 is now out! No automatic .zip extractor yet, because sc2mapster unexpectedly blocks the .cmd file we need to make it happen. We will see if there is any way to bypass this. Do not hesitate to let me know if you find any bug, which I am sure is not going to happen *cough*
@Koranis79: Go
Do the subtitles appear even if you turn the game's subtitles off in Options?
Fantastic work! One question though: is it possible to turn off the cinematic subtitles?
Also "Loomings" campaign still says "unable to open the map".
@valas991: Go
I agree with you on the medic thing :D
@darivlad: Go
Just checked that cutscene....and holy hell, it is really awesome!
And the medic thing is funny ^^
The new version is very awesome. Just a small hint: the end cutscene at the 2nd terran mission (I do not want to spoil anything for the new players) is amazing. Thank you Mass Recall team for all the hard work that you have putted into this project. You are so cool !!!!! :)
A random comment on Dark Swarm because someone asked about it below - Dark Swarm does not protect buildings at all. Further, it only is supposed to protect units under it from direct ranged attacks. For example, splash damage from a tank will still hit, but the primary damage will not.
Hi Telenil,
"Let me know how the new Easy feels once v5.3 is out".
Count on me, I shall replay all Terran and Protoss campaigns avoiding to cheat as far as possible.
Greetings
Robert
@Koranis79: Go
I see your point :)
@Telenil: Go Yeah, it's indeed scary.
It is a better experience, indeed, although I have only played like 14 maps from the original game, so I can't relate that much.., but what I played, I enjoyed more in Mass Recall. For me it was more believeable with this kind of graphics. The only thing you can't really reach is the dark atmosphere, which is not your fault, since the SC2 style is just different.
Even though you might not be able to get that atmosphere, you certainly got the spirit of the game....at least I felt it :)
And I remember Jayborino saying that this is how he thinks Blizz wanted to make the original SC, they just didn't have that technical stuff. I quite agree with him.
@valas991: Go
The original campaign might have been done by Blizzard but a remake in another engine is an entirely different thing. To get right the same feeling the original had is not a trivial thing, especially if your efforts are somewhat hampered by the fact that you cannot go George Lucas on it and still make it faithful - and FUN to play. This is the reason why so many remakes fail these days, and this is the reason why I think Mass Recall should be considered a creation of the MR team, not a Blizzard's legacy.
Another conceptually similar and successful project might be Black Mesa. I don't think anybody praised Valve for its quality. Nor anyone will still be thanking Relic if Gearbox manages to pull it off with Homeworld Remastered.
@Koranis79: Go
Thanks! =)
@valas991: Go
Yeah, Mass Recall only took a fraction of the work necessary to make a campaign from scratch, which is a bit scary when you think it is easily thousands of hours between us.
What I do think is that Mass Recall is a better experience than the original Brood War campaign, by virtue of not using an engine coded in the 20th century. The graphics and capabilities of the editor have been tremendously improved in Starcraft 2, so the real challenge was how to use these UI and visuals while preserving the spirit that made the 1998 campaigns so memorable. Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback, from old fans and newcommers alike, I'd say we succeeded.
@RobertCL: Go
Let me know how the new Easy feels once v5.3 is out.
@RobertCL: Go
Easy will be made easier in v.5.3 according to Telenil.
As for "your campaigns are far better", I do not want to be a jerk, but this campaign is still from Blizzard. I really appreciate what these guys made, because they put long-long hours into it in their free time (which I tend to forget sometimes....) and its quality is really one of the best, but the fact is fact; this campaign was originally made by Blizzard. But yeah, I agree that the story of SC1 is vastly better than the SC2's one.
@Reksum: Go About bugs: 1) Do you use the latest mod? Because that freezing used to be in the mods before 5.0 (If I am correct)
2), 3) I saw them sometimes too, but they didn't bother me.
4) I think it is always good to see the cutscenes these guys made. However, Telenil once said that making skippable cutscenes are harder than it sounds, especially if you didn't do it with that intention in the first place. I only had loading issues on the first two maps of campaign 4. And it is possible to start the map with a save, so in case you screw something up, you do not have to load the map again, if you do not want to watch the cutscenes again. (I guess this is the problem you were referring to, but I am not sure)
5) No idea, I've never used Dark Swarm.
@asdss866: Go I think you should delete your stuff [the Mass Recall ones, not the game itself], then place them again into their proper place, then do the installation as intended, and then it should work (implying you got a legit copy of HotS)
So basically, start the installation from the beginning.
I hope I could help.
100% agree with Koranis79.
Sole regret: the easy difficulty setting is still too hard for me, being a casual player. I would like to win without "being forced to cheat" by adding ressources especially late in campaigns...
Paradoxally it is harder for a Terran player to destroy other Terrans than Zergs. I played the Protoss and Terran campaigns twice: once in version 5.1 and once in version 5.2. Version 5.2 was a huge improvement compared with version 5.1.
Your team is doing an outstanding work and yes your campaigns are far better than those of the original game (except that in the original game I can win all scenarios at easy setting). Keep up the good work!
Adding Enslavers and Dark Vengeance campaigns would be indeed a good idea as "long term project" since they apparently use the same units equipment file. However but I clearly understand the map conversion issue and the lack of time. I modded PeG-WW2, I was alone for this and all people asked why this and that was not yet done. They although knew it was during my free time!!! So I fully understand you when you say what is possible or not due to technical and/or time constraints.
The Mass Recall project is one of the best things to happen to RTS games. I applaud all the efforts of everyone involved. MR is far superior to anything the new trilogy offered so far and I cannot wait for the 5.3, to start playing all over again and enjoying the cutscenes properly embedded in the already superb campaign itself. I can only thank you and offer you my worthless gratitude in return, and hope you guys find some inspiration and strength (and time!) to make it! :)
What I like about it as someone who started with WOL campaign and never played the original one:
1) The story is vastly better. Some of the dialogue is really sick, like Mengsk's speech at the end of Rebel Yell, just about everything the Overmind says, and what Zeratul said about his experiences. I also like playing on all sides; it makes the story less predictable and makes the "bad guys" more human. The cutscenes are very impressive; I liked the staged battles and the unit formations (like the Valkryie squadrons and the lines of marines). Also I liked the music added that wasn't part of the original game, especially the music at the last SC1 Zerg mission, some of the UED missions, and the Omega mission.
2) The AI is quite scary. It actually uses abilities like irradiate, plague, and mind control. It uses huge timing attacks (like the Ultralisk rush in the last SC1 mission) and frequent multi-pronged attacks that sometimes head straight for the mineral lines. Also I liked the use of burrow ambushes, screen shakes, and "LIVE FOR THE SWARM" that made me jump and wave my mouse erratically.
There were of course some bugs:
1) Sunken colonies will "freeze". The animation shows a very very long thin spine extended and frozen in midair.
2) Nukes will "freeze". The AI's nukes sometimes freeze in midair and you can see the missile.
3) Many small clumps of enemy units are stuck on the edges of cliffs or other terrain obstacles and wobble around trying to get out.
4) Many missions don't have properly working save points. The only way to guarantee a save point to work is to fully load the mod and the relevant mission (even waiting for the cinematics to finish) first.
5) Dark Swarm doesn't seem to block all ranged attacks. Siege tanks and battlecruisers can destroy sunken/spore colonies under a dark swarm in the Omega mission. Also it seems that hydralisks can shoot while inside it which was not possible in the original BW if I remember correctly.
