If you have gear you can easily replace that's socketted, don't bother removing gems since it costs money. Just salvage, and you get the gem back all the same.
I don't know about your economy, but check the AH while it's still up (Gold one, not Real Money). Diamonds here are selling at a crazy high price. I sold two Star Diamonds for 2m each.
Paragon levels are levels you get with any 60 character, carries over to all your other characters. You can level up indefinitely, there is no level cap. You just get secondary stats out of it, nothing crazy. The good thing is you can reset the points and place them again any time, for any character. If you really need gold badly, invest in some Goldfind gear, and one of the Paragon stats is +Gold Find.
Both works. If you start new, you'll find yourself leveling much faster, and getting legendaries as you progress.
If you use an old character, you'll be replacing all your gear immediately with the first thing you find, and feel an immediate power jump.
It's pretty much win-win as far as having fun is concerned. You still have to be aware of what D3's gameplay is though, so if you don't like repetitive dungeon crawlers or grinding for loot, then this game still might not be for you.
Totally feel ya on the Necro. I'm happy they're adding the Crusader though, the Paladin was my favourite hero from D2. But I do miss the Necro, who was definitely most played class. Witchdoctor just doesn't seem to stack up the same way.
I played D3 when it came out for about 2 weeks straight, then dropped it like a ton of bricks. I loved the combat and the visuals, but the game was nigh unplayable. To me, it had too many design flaws.
The game forced you to play through 3 times to get to max level, the gear you get was never good enough to keep you in the content, and there were arbitrary walls of difficulty that forced you to go hunting for gear in the AH. I haven't touched the game in almost 2 years since it came out.
Loot 2.0 dropped a few weeks ago, and the system threw out everything I hated about the game. They added a difficulty slider so you can choose how hard enemies are (and how much bonus EXP, meaning you can hit 1-60 in one playthrough if you choose), legendaries are actually dropping more often and affect your builds, and all the abilities feel a lot better and focused for different ways to play without feeling you have to be the 'best spec'.
If you have D3, I'd suggest you try the latest patch and see if you like it. That's how Reaper will play. For me, this has brought back a lot of D2 nostalgia, and with the AH going away I've already pre-ordered Reaper. Ask me this 2 weeks ago and I would have told you Diablo 3 was still shit, but the latest patch really did a number of changes that made me have faith again in the series. To me, it really feels like Diablo 2 again.
Really depends what extemt and limitations we're looking at. They seem to want a specific type of gameplay for Heroes, so we're not looking to make wacky arcade maps like we can in SC2.
I'm still very interested in seeing what options are available. Hopefully we can have some more PVE options while using the MOBA style heroes, like for Hero Siege modes or a Boss Battle fight.
I'm guessing they'll do something similar to League, where you can get everything (sans skins) for free but spend an abnormal amount of time to acquire everything. I would really hate for them to go for a pay-per-hero route, but I doubt they'd be as generous as DOTA's system.

For the Gnoll, I cleaned up some of the textures and lines, and added a bit more shading to pop out his features. He still needs a weapon and armor options down the line.
I redid the hair for the Troll. I was never happy with the original mohawk, this one is a lot closer to what I originally had in mind. Also fixed a bit of his animations, mainly the hand issue for his attack. I want to revisit the bracers and axes some time.
