The marine works well to show the enormity of what you've constructed. It looks very well put together. Good work.

What assets did you use for the inner walls of the temple?

As a heavily-individualist society, tribalism doesn't require direct offspring. The protoss had their familial links and loyalties until the end of the Aeon of Strife and the creation of the Khala turned them into a collectivist empire. All of the data gleaned from SC/BW lacks any explicit mention of protoss having or lacking genitalia with which to reproduce, just as SC2's lore does, and yet the scriptwriting of SC2 mandates that protoss offspring must exist despite this never being mentioned in BW.

It winds up becoming another case of blizzard not planning their story out to any great detail, resulting in a massive shift in their writing that seems to run counter to the original intentions. Obviously, some of these are bound to happen, given the breadth of time between BW's release and SC2's development, but it's evidenced even more heavily in SC2 as well, with fans having to struggle to justify the existence of glaring plot holes and inconsistencies in the story for it to make sense in any context.

posted a message on Seeking feedback for detail-oriented terrain

If there's a megathread for this kind of thing, let me know. I couldn't find anything of that nature.

Using years of Brood War terraining experience and blizzard's own campaign maps for reference, I'm developing detail-oriented terrain for campaign missions and I'm seeking feedback. I'll be posting screenshots of my efforts, along with a brief write-up of the biome and the intended effect of the terrain pieces. You don't need to be a cartographer to post feedback, either - I'm looking for any constructive input that will allow me to create great terrain. If I'm on the right track, I want to know that so I can stay on that track; similarly, if I'm doing something wrong, I'd like to correct that mistake as soon as possible.

Please let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

    Aiur - Lonely, overgrown temple

    http://i.imgur.com/uFIHsM6.jpg

This out-of-the-way temple is perfect for a band of insurgent protoss to hide out. With nature enveloping the structure in the centuries since the Aeon of Strife, the location of this old shrine was soon forgotten by much of the Conclave, allowing trespassers and squatters to have free reign over the temple grounds.

    http://i.imgur.com/KycejcB.jpg

The inspiration came from the desire to create a believable hideout for a group of dissident protoss. As they are a grim reminder of the loss the protoss race suffered during the Aeon of Strife, the Conclave is unlikely to have retaken many of their ancient temples, even centuries after the conflict's conclusion - but a lack of groundskeeping has come at a cost. The temple is overgrown, its effigies in disrepair and its foundations riddled with flora and fauna. While not quite a respectable place to call home, the shrine's central courtyard is shrouded in trees and old statues, creating a thick fog that further improves the secrecy of the region.

As this map is my current focus, I'll continue updating the thread with additional screenshots as I complete more areas. Thanks again for taking a look and seeing what I have to offer. I hope to use the feedback I gain here to improve my terraining capabilities. Cheers.

Aside from the lack of nerve cords (which are severed after a protoss makes the decision to become Nerazim), there is literally no physical difference between the Nerazim protoss and any other protoss. They are the same race, not a different species, so why the hell (and how the hell) would they have evolved an entire new biological structure (mouths) in the time span of 4 years since BW (where they were confirmed not to have mouths in cinematics, at least in Zeratul's case) while their Khalai brethren don't? That literally doesn't make any sense.

It probably is something like 150-200, but the most info you'll find on this is probably in one of those books they created and then retconned years ago.

I'll fill it out. Diamond 3 in league, probably have more to say about competition/high level play than I do about skins and currency and the like.

posted a message on There are 3 different Tal'darim

Except you don't pay to read my comments, whereas I am a consumer who bought a copy of the game. As a consumer who is paying money and funding blizzard, I am entitled to a game that isn't garbage. And when I'm on a site that exists specifically to provide a forum for people who want to write and dissect stories for StarCraft campaigns, voicing grievances about blizzard's own piss-poor job is not out of line, nor should it be perceived as such.

The purpose of this thread, as far as I can infer, was to discuss the handling of the tal'darim faction pre-lotv and how that affected the faction and the protoss race as a whole. My position is that it is a series of plot holes and inconsistencies that is indicative of blizzard simply not planning out their story before producing individual chapters of it. That's the extent of my intended participation in this discussion. Why you've chosen to personally attack me instead of just responding to my points (if you indeed disagreed) is beyond me.

I don't tolerate shitty storytelling, and I'm certainly not an apologist for poor writing. If that bothers you, don't read my posts.

The protoss are the most interesting race in StarCraft, and they're also the most fucked, mostly because of blizzard glossing over details and leaving people like us to try to 'rationalise' and make excuses for the details simply not being there. That's not an objectively effective way to write a story, and subjectively, the fact that so many people don't seem to mind at all pisses me off.

The fact that you have to make excuses and infer/use headcanon is evidence enough that something is fucked with blizzard's methods.

You realise that they're just plot holes, right? It's not like blizzard made three or four versions of the tal'darim and then just fused them all together, they just continuously blundered and bumbled all over themselves while writing the script and forgot half of their own campaigns (which is why they retcon everything about terrazine in lotv for example)

The way they move around with little to no clothing in some of the cinematics would lead you to believe that if they had sex organs at all, they're internal (or just very small).

It was always ambiguous in brood war, but blizzard hamfisted maternity into the protoss race in legacy of the void, with Vorazun making several references to Raszagal as her 'mother'. They don't explain how protoss reproduce - the only hint we have is the Kassia crystal, which apparently allows protoss to be a more prolific race. Parthenogenesis could explain protoss reproduction but nothing has been confirmed.

There isn't actually a need for blizzard to have engendered the race, since there is no evidence of sex organs, so I personally chalk up the inclusion of 'male' or 'female' protoss and the nebulousness of the race's population growth to lazy writing.
