Problem solved - client crashes every time if you develop your map data with the 'detail' or 'wizard' view tab open. At first you can use these tabs without client crashes if not much data is altered, but as you add more and more changes it will always crash. Switch between table view and xml view only.
I am getting an 'unexpected fatal error' when I try to alter unit cost values. i.e. when I lower the required mins/gas for various upgrades then hit 'ok', the client will immediately crash. I had no problem altering cost values when I started making the map, but now suddenly it crashes.. anyone experience this before?
