    posted a message on Map making for money

    @Bommes: Go

    Well, I would give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt and assume that they have in fact been working on Map Marketplace, but, due to Blizzard Polish Standards, many ideas have been developed and scraped because they would damage the Sc2 custom map modder/consumer community of today. Without improving it. The Arcade is evidence of work being done towards Marketplace, they just didn't feel ready to implement a payment system into the Arcade because that has a potential to rock the boat.

    Blizzard seems to prefer to make minor changes to Starcraft, and make major changes by creating a new Starcraft that has major differences. Perhaps they will make Sc2 Free-to-Play, but you only get basic multiplayer, and the ability to purchase custom games. Free games would be included in the $40 to buy the game, or something. That would be a nice way to do it, and Blizzard could have really well done games cycle though being free for a week so people are interested in it.

    In it's current state, one is unlikely to make money by making maps. It is however a good experience. People usually don't make money from attending high school, but you can put on your job application that you have experience. Say, "my game has x,xxx people playing it."

    Yeah.. I don't think I can even understand what I was getting at, something about a puppeteer Starmon, maybe. We'll pretend I drunk posted.

    @BladeOfAiur: Go

    I knew it! also, MTG is 1/3 having the $, 50% luck, 40% skill, 1/5 timing and 12% impossible. It's magic.. I guess.

    Sidequest: (repeating) A farmer needs help Weeding, Watering, Cooking, or Planting his crop. Weeding must be done by a steel, rock, flying, ect type. Watering needs a water, ice (other?) type. Cooking the harvested crop needs Fire, Electric, Dragon, or something like that. Planting can be done by almost any other type: normal, ghost, poison (though, poison might give you points towards the dark side) and whatever else.

    Once the work is done, the farmer rewards you with a freshly baked pie, some cold lemonade, a gem you dug up or something like that. You also get points for being helpful, and points for being a jerk (you always get the other reward, either because the farmer doesn't know, or it's not him giving it.)

    Can only be done once every "Game time" day, or something. Possibly you can do a whole cycle per day, or whatever.

    Yay! I reminded you to consider adding a character you had already created into the game that you are creating. Also, I am happy that the gist of m favorite evolution "tree" has life in Starmon.

    Almaity, what say you to a Ghost-Normal, type that is the Yang to Doll-Girl's Yin? S/he would be a more "spiritual" or "essence-based" human-ish from. This may be double-plus-un-good if you meant "special" as in standing alone, with no compliment, opposition or counter. What I'm thinking is something of a Mew to her Mewtwo. I have no idea what it'd look like, but an Archon would come closet (and what they are "made of" supports the lore that I'm imagining) but more ethereal... if that was possible.

    This and That are kind of what I imagine, but less Protoss-y, the Dark Archon with less of a claw and more of a hand. Actually, Haunter/Gangar are probably my inspiration. Although, green would be a better color if it's complimenting Doll-Girl's purple.

    Now, as for a name, I'm thinking something in the realm of Feliritu/Faeritu (Felix-Spiritus, happy spirit) or possibly Nymphalix (faerie-happy). Although the 'Mon has a dark appearance and not-so-pure type, the actual "spirit" (sorry) of the 'Mon would be that of an ancient, wise, kind, uninvolved type of being... unless things get sticky. Anyhow, yeah. /ramble

    Squee! I love her! Like a purple Ralts. (gonna go admire the OP now.) Though, admittedly, more like Kirlia with a hint of Garedevoir.

    Only thing I can think of it maybe adjust her gaze to be more in a corner/side of her eye.

    You need to link to the Moves Video on page 2.

    @zeldarules28: Go Ah, alright. I had that odd feeling that something was out of character about no edits to your posts in this thread. (I have been around here a while, but I only started voicing recently. It was like, this is a good place to look out for upcoming maps. Let's check back every few weeks. But I really wanted to attempt to share ideas with the devs of Starmon.)

    So... no updated OP for another 2 months? Hrm. Oh well. "The hordes" will poke heads in when there's a video to watch anyhow.

    @DaFunk86: Go tvtropes. Gah. The life of an "informed" consumer. On another note, that's what sharing is for! Fun! (/tvtropes discussion. I will not hijack this thread.)

    posted a message on (GE) Better StarCraft 2 Version Project

    Posting a Translated version. Ran it through Google Translate, changed some of Google's mistakes. Some of it is beyond me though, I can't even tell what Google says he means and my German is not enough to help.

    Quote from RedDelonge: Go

    Hi,

    First, some information about me: I am 25 years old and have played my first games at age 6. With 7 years was itself sparked my interest to develop games and have already developed many board game and computer game concepts. Furthermore, I have tried all sorts of map editors. The list ranges from the editors of all the possible Settlers 2 Command & Conquer parts to Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 1 and 2 of course. The thing I know about game design I've been reading in addition to the study of computer science and before and have already made their own experiences. Since the beta of Starcraft 2 WoL I have spent hundreds of hours with an active forum and keep me informed on various things related to Starcraft 2. Also, I've watched very closely relevant articles on TeamLiquid and project oneGoal. [Link added, IDK if it's to the correct place, I had no idea oneGoal existed.]

    My skills: As indicated above, I know myself a little about the Galaxy Editor. I use different units and abilities and change values and skills to move to other units. I do not know how to change the animation, such as to have an animation run longer and I do not have as much experience with the trigger editor. Though I am posting in German, I use the English version.

    The aim of my project: The project will be a mod of Heart of the Swarm, will be offered in more variety in terms of unit combinations, but at the same time the fundamental Heart of the Swarm is not changed too much. This means that new units as e.g. installed at oneGoal were, for my taste, a step too far, even if the units have been implemented very nicely in many aspects. However, existing units and ability are already significantly altered and implemented some new features. The balancing is of course an accompanying factor, but it is not the intention of this project. The focus is clearly on offering for players and spectators a more dynamic and more varied feel.

    Concept: The basic concept I have written in the form of official patch notes in English and can be seen in spite of specific values for guidance only. Nothing is final!

    Team: Currently I developed alone and strive for a team of 2-3 people. Furthermore, I am happy to swap with you from above suggestions and if we have a good working environment, I would have great interest to help you in your future projects.

    Duration of the project: I suspect that an experienced user of the Galaxy Editor can convert the entire patch notes in 2-3 days. So within about 30 h for inexperienced developers is hard to say how long the learning curve in the animation editor or Trigger Editor lasts. Begin to develop soon after Heart of the Swarm is released, ie on 12.03.2013. Nevertheless, one might already get in touch and talk about my developed patch notes and adjust it to even.

    Target Area: The mod is initially intended for the German region. If successful, however, I would want to make available to other regions. But this is a long way off.

    Future projects: Of course, this project is also after its completion not fully developed and therefore would like to expand that version and expand.

    Contact us: There is a possibility to contact me via TeamSpeak 3, Skype, e-mail, ICQ, Trillian and phone to communicate. I prefer first over this thread in Starcraft 2 Mapster contact in contact with you, but would of course after the first words very early and are speaking out with you on TeamSpeak, Skype, private meetings or otherwise in contact.

    I still thank StarCraft 2 Mapster for the opportunities that will hobby developers offered here.

    @Mozared: Go It only really sucks you in if you really really like a tv show, or whatever else. I read through some of the Pokemon ones, the Starcraft ones, then I only derp around when I find one that is cool.

    @TheAlmaity: Go I'm so so so sorry. If it's any consolation, I spent my whole night on that site too. At least it is useful, so it's not a total waste of time. Its like this big book of ideas, ready to be rehashed. Or averted. Anyhow, I hope you got something useful out of it.

    EDIT: Also, what do you think about updating the OP to show what's different now, 6 months later? Just change any points that you guys changed, add any new features you guys have, just a general refresh of the map's overview for new people. Linking to the move pool spreadsheet and other such "leaks" and "spoilers" would be nice. Oftentimes, people only read the OP and reply.

    You don't seem like the type of person to edit posts, but I think it's good to edit the OP to avoid an Archive Hell scenario (not linking to that wiki) because that scares people off. I also edit my posts to avoid double posting and for punctuation errors. (I tend to hit POST before I think real hard for real long and proof read.)

    Alright guys, being gamers and mod devs, I'm sure you already know about all the tropes. If you don't, go here and learn. I bring them up because they can sometimes be good inspiration for additional content. My writer friend, artist friend and I (game consumer) like browsing through this reference for narrative devices, (I can't think of a synonym for Trope, but insert one here) and conventions that people know about and use. Not cliche mind you, trope is not a derogatory term.

    A trope that I think would inspire a small bout of story would be Loophole Abuse, or Lord British Postulate. Don't make it a "requirement to beat the game," because you're remaking Pokemon, not Legend of Zelda.

    A chase scene could take place because someone found out about Team Evil (but they don't in the main plot, you would push them into discovery) and you have to do something about it.

    Also, I feel like I've seen one of these in Pokemon before, so it might be a good reference to add. It's also possible that Team Evil is not really evil.

    ["]Simple["] SideQuest ideas are probably the most useful thing right now. :)

    So, if you guys don't have a Jade Figurine type quest, they are great little goodies. For those of you who are not familiar with this term that I may have just coined now, a "Jade Figurine" quest refers to a Diablo 2, Act 3 quest where one finds a Jade Figurine after killing a random hero/unique monster. You then trade it with the guy who took you in his boat to that jungle for a Golden Bird. It turns out the bird holds the ashes of a man who studied immortality of sorts, so you get extra life by turning it into a potion.

    My point is, stumbling through the woods, finding a thingy (either held by a starmon, if hold items happen, or on the ground) that looks special would be awesome. Imagine having beaten the 6th gym leader (I don't know the equivalent, haven't read this thread in a while) and getting access to some new area. you derp down a side path and find a weird cave. Upon entering and exploring, it's an ancient temple thingy. Inside you find a rare dude, or some random item thingy and decide to take it. You take it back to town, as it seems important. Someone gives you a starmon egg, or a "rare candy" or a "pp max" that increases energy. Something like that.

    Maybe the quest turns into a Biggoron Sword quest, and you re-explore the whole starmon world (with new travel abilities) trading back and forth before you get a really nice reward. Maybe it turns out that the "figurine" is part of a set, and if you find the other 6 that are in different "towns" or "areas" then you get the thingy. Maybe it's only worth 10 money. Maybe it lets you carry one extra starmon in your party. Idk.

    EDIT: Skimmed through the last half of the thread. It's HUGE!!! anyhow:

    Quote from BladeOfAiur: Go

    Deathtouch- Vigilance-

    He played MTG.

    Oh, and guys, you need an escort mission! Fun version: Double battle trek through a gorge against multiple team evil ambushes. You are aided by a Mr.Good-Guy or Ally-for-the-moment and a damsel-in-distress follows you. Not fun version: Double battle trek through a field of bizarre fiends and jagged cliffs. Your companion is actually quite bad at starmon, but you can't let any of his/her dudes faint.

    Either one has opportunity for a prequest where you find some girl being mugged or a cat stuck up a tree.

    @SoulFilcher: Go

    Well, I compared the height of the 4/5 story buildings in the front. All of that crap looks like it's about four or five stories tall because there are windows/balconies or whatever ridges there. You can see three distinct floors above the ground floor (four stories total) of the buildings at the edge of the "plaza" with the Mengsk statue. Most of the buildings in Korhal look to be about that same height. The tower on the right that gets close to the clouds/BC wing looks to be four or five times the height of the regular buildings near its base. I don't think that any of the massive buildings are in sight, or if they are, they are miles away. The one on the left is possibly as many as 30 floors tall.

    My estimation may have been off, but I think that tower is about 15-20 stories tall. Just to be clear, I'm using larger than normal stories. I think I actually confused myself, but the tower doesn't seem massive. It's more like a pre-20th century sky scraper, or a tall building rather than a standard apartment/business. The Willis tower is massive, as is the Burj Khalifa, but many of the other towers in Chicago and Dubai are not 500m+ in height. At any rate, from the architecture, it's more plausible for it to be shorter than Earth's "multi-tube" type structures.

    I'm sorry if I'm being a dick, I'm just really bad at ignoring questions that aren't bully-class. I feel as though the scale of the Cruiser is close to something that makes sense, not just because Blizzard should know better than to spend thousands on a cinematic that is not to scale.

    posted a message on HoTS Opening Cinematic

    @Daara87: Go The one in this cinematic looks pretty accurate to me. For the sake of this video I'm going to say those sky scrapers are 70 stories tall. Ok, well that puts them at roughly 875-950 feet tall, about half the length of a the Bucephalus. As we can see from the video over half of the Battlecruiser is show before it actually makes contact with the ground. Blizzard got this right and anyone who says otherwise can't do simple math. <</quote>>

    The Bucephalus is 550m. That's 1805 feet. In my estimation, the skyscraper on the right side of the frame when we see the Battle Cruiser fall, is approx 15 stories tall. We can see approx half of the battlecruiser. If it is the Bucephalus, then that's about 900 feet, I think it's a bit more. Let's go with 1000 feet.

    What we see of the BC on screen, 1000', is about twice as tall as the skyscraper to the right (assuming the one right next to the BC is as tall as the close by one) without correcting for tilt. If you were to tilt the structure to the same angle as the cruiser, then we get about 2.5 or 3 towers in height for the BC on screen. If the building is 15 stories high, and we use an estimate of 15' per story, that's 225' per building. 225(2.5)=563. 225(3)=675. This brings us to somewhere around 6-700 feet of the BC on screen, or 1200-1400 feet total.

    Basically, a 1400' BC is not the Bucephalus. That's more like 450m, not 550m. I might have underestimated, or, it might be a standard BC. Anyhow, the scale is close to what makes sense. The buildings in the front row are 4 stories tall. The buildings at the base of the skyscraper are about the same height. If it's more like 20 stories per tower (Now that I think about that, that's closer), that's still 750-900' of BC on screen, or a much closer 1500-1800' of total.

    @TacoManStan: Go What, can't the cinematic be great in some aspects and somewhat lacking in others?

    Also, as someone said, this is the opening cinematic, aka the beginning of the story. It is not a commercial.

    @Triceron: Go

    The marines in the Brood War introduction were not from the Earth, the UED refer to them as the colonists. But yes, these were more convincing.

    Alright, I would argue that the opening cinematic is more of a prologue than a first chapter. It gives you a sense of the story, but isn't where the story starts. If you watch the cinematics that played when SC Vanilla, SC:BW and SC Anthology (There were three separate videos. One Pre-BW, idk how there were two during/after BW, but if I remember correctly, there were.) were "loading," like, when you first boot the game up, you would notice that they are not really a part of the story. Blizzard's opening cinematics are really just to give you a taste of atmosphere, show you setting. The introduction of people is a bonus that happens sometimes. The second cinematic is for story.

    This cinematic was made to show you how Kerrigan feels. This expansion focuses on her because she is the most human of the Zerg, and a leader among them. This means we can relate to her and see the big picture. We see through this battle scene that Kerrigan knows that the Zerg, if united, are a powerful and destructive force. A force she intends to tool into a weapon of her revenge. A weapon she (literally) dreams of bringing down on the capital of the dominion, but mostly to get revenge on Mengsk (the guy who abandoned her to the Zerg in the name of revenge for killing his father). That's a lot of setting to convey. The statue falls, then the flagship falls, then we see the girl, no goddess, who made/will make that happen in an incredibly vulnerable position.

    About the Confederate Marine in the SC:BW, (or Vanilla, I can't remember,) he was on Chau Sara, no one knows where he is from, but his ancestors lived on earth.

Would be absolutely awesome. That's probably my favorite evo chain ever. Srys (Tarals, Palts or Larts), Neria (Emulia or Amoria) are name ideas for the first two. I'm trying to keep roots and it's not working out so well. Oh well.
