Hi! I'm working on a similar project called HercMerc. They are on the EU servers if you want to try them.

Now that I actually played them - I realize they are not as common. Only thing that is common is the mercenary part of it Still, cool and fun map to play!

posted a message on Map making for money

A built in donate button would be enough.

A major obstacle to paid map content is a) you can always extract content from the mpq files - which means someone can copy ip very easily. Who came first? Who was the original creator? b) if you read the legal documentation: blizzard owns everything you upload to their servers. Why should you get paid for something that is blizzards property? After the DOTA thingy, I think they made changes to the legal documents surrounding the custom scene. c) I don't think the arcade has a player base that is loyal & rich enough to pay for content. If you want these players: learn how to make stuff in unity and launch a website with games or make unity-games for Iphones.

Have a look at this graph: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-12-05/the-evolution-of-the-video-game

How much of this do you think the Blizzard Arcade has as a platform? Sure: its a part of the windows & mac gaming platform - but I would still argue that its very, very small. You will never be able to make any significant amount of money out of this. Live with it (or move on (or get a job at Blizzard)).

I'm personally looking forward to the new social features: making a group with fans for my maps will be nice :) Even if there is only one fan its a "social capital" that i appreciate much.

posted a message on Loading screen art needed!

Try sifting through the art library at battle.net and deviant art. If you use someones stuff, ask nicely and Im sure its no problem with the right attribution.

Also: have a look at my loadscreen fader (in my HercMerc project). it can do nice stuff with quite simple graphics.

posted a message on Moon spinning and orbiting a planet

I made a planetarum mod. its available among my files and also on the EU server. It uses records and is fairly generic. The one here on Mapster is an earlier version. The one on EU is more updated. I used the sphere model for a sun (added some shine to it) and the planet models as planets... :) Send me a pm or something if you want more info.

posted a message on Airship Map Idea: Possible??

I dont think this would be possible. The sc2 engine is built to render things from top down. I think a better mod would be a multiplayer version of the "arcade" game you can play in the campaign (hyperion cantine). Each player would have a ship and then make it possible to shoot at incoming stuff. Perhaps you could upgrade it with a wasd controls and mouse-click for targeting. There are better engines out there if you want to make a star fox type of game ^^

posted a message on BAS held up by new business model

Making a store for blizzard content in a blizzard mod in a separate game is a good learning and stepping stone for them if they ever decide to make a map-marketplace. The only thing that seems strange is that the content might be available in a too transparent fashion. I mean: if the stuff is built on the sc2 engine then the BAS content will be packaged into those mpq files? And those can be easily opened. But if you can open them and play with the custom models in sc2 arcade games, why would anyone buy them in the first place?

    Tricky stuff!

posted a message on Safe For Bnet Words

Is it bastard as in bastard son or is it bastard as in idiot? Perhaps you could use a "nicer" word with the same meaning? Tychus uses "hell" and Raynor uses "heck" in the campaign. Some swearwords are allowed. Also, who are you calling a bastard and under what circumstances? Its probably more ok if its just some random idiot while not ok if its linked to some racism etc.

posted a message on LoadScreen Fader

I uploaded a little map with a custom action definition (function) that fades the loadscreen in a pretty nice manner. It seems to be quite popular (60 downloads, which is a lot for me!) so I thought I would bump it here so that more people can see it. Basically it does the following:

    • When the map is loading/starting I display an custom image with a logo and some text.
    • When the map has finished loading I quickly throw up a fullscreen image. The image is the same as the loadscreen. This gives an effect that the loadingbar dissapeared.
    • Next add a fullscreen image that only contains the text and the logo. The rest is transparent. Its added on top/bottom of the other fullscreen image.
    • Now I slowly start reducing the transparency of the fullscreen image with color. The effect is that the logo remains while the game appears in the background. Sort of a burn mark.
    • When the background/fill is 100% transparent I start fading the logo.

The total effect gives a very smooth transition into the game. You can display this little show while your ingame mod/library is being constructed.
