I added you unit to the probe's build ability under Info +. I also added a footprint to the unit and a placement actor to the unit's actor. You can now build the cannon but for some reason the unit's actor won't create but the unit will still be there.

I added a probe to your map so that you can test the build ability.

OMG I JUST FIGURED OUT WHAT IM DOING WRONG!

You know that window that you can open in Info+ that has all those options like effects and other such stuff? Well stupid me didn't notice a scroll bar on the side of window.... Until now.... I scrolled down to find more options including unit options....

    /I'm an ultra noob.avi

Well.... Now that I have the build thing working... How do I fix the actor problem? Like it's not building the actor but only the unit, thus making the unit have no abilities.

And if all else fails upload the map for us to look at.

I did upload the map, scroll up to one of my earlier posts and click the link on it.

Also... @ the other guy: you mean replace the pylon as a test? Because if it's not for a test than that won't work because the map requires that you still be able to build all normal buildings.

Also, the map I uploaded is just the new unit/building, I'm working on getting all the custom stuff done first before I actually construct the look of the map.

Under the Abilities data type in the upper left window it shows ability name then source then actor type. All the building unit training abilities and a few others are of the Train type of ability. The train ability can construct any unit as can the Build type abilities. To use the build type ability to train your unit it needs is to have a Buildable type ability on it.

Just tried again using your new advice and it didn't work. I can't figure out how to link my button and/or my ability, or even just anything, with my unit/building. I got all the way to the point where I had the buttons in but I couldn't find an option to actually have it build my unit. Also, when I tested it out, none of the buttons showed up.

    • Yes, I did edit the probe build ability in the abilities tab.
    • Yes, I did edit the probe's command card and abilities tab.

What the heck am I doing wrong!? All my attemps are useless! I'm THIS close to just deleting the whole unit and starting from scratch with something I actually know how to do...

I'm either failing horribly or I'm misisng something... I won't get mad at you if you don't reply because, trust me, if I was you, I wouldn't really want to continue helping a player who just keeps failing. :L

If you reply again and it still does not work, I'm going to seek help elsewhere. (I understand it's not your fault, and that it's simply mine because I'm too much of a noob to figure this out.)

Look at the Train type abilities used by each worker.

    Then follow this.

    http://www.sc2mapster.com/wiki/galaxy/data/abilities/queueable/train/

I'm so sorry it's just that I'm so confused! None of it makes any sense! I can't even find the Train ability because when I look, it only has Train for buildings!

If you don't feel like helping me anymore than I understand because I know I've been kind of anoying on this thread...

But if you do wish to still help me, here is the map, also keep in mind that the Photon Defender unit/building is in alpha stage, so it might be buggy if you test it out: http://filesmelt.com/dl/Photon_Defender.SC2Map

Also, I think I have an idea as to what might be wrong, but it might not be true: Maybe my Photon Defender isn't set as a building? I don't remember seeing an option for that so I just set it has a unit... I'll check over that and update you with that info when you reply.

@bjpiers123: Go Ok, step by step then. So that you can add new buildings to a worker.

1- create the unit 2- create a new button for it, if the buttons for each worker are different somehow then create 3 buttons. 3- Edit the build ability for each worker and add an entry for your building. 4- Edit the worker unit's command card and add the button to it.

There are other things that may be necessary, like creating a requirement for the building if its not going to use a requirement that already exists.

Hm... I've tried this and I think you're missing some steps...

I made it all the way to step 3 and then I ran into problems:

    • There is no ability called "Warp in Photon Defender", "Build Photon Defender", or "Mutate into Photon Defender".
    • I can't figure out how to link my button with my unit, which is what the other buildings have done.
    • I can't figure out how to set the an ability's unit, that's if I even succeed in creating the ability (I tested with other, pre-made abilitys).

    Any ideas?

    Well that was... Confusing.

I just tried that and still nothing is working. I need a tutorial for this. I want the probe, scv, and drone to be able to each build the Photon Defender. I need to learn this step by step. Help?

@bjpiers123: Go You also have to add the button to the unit's command card.

None of that works! You can't add that ability via just the ability and command card options because the actual option for "Warp in Photon Defender" isn't there! It has to be added manually and that is what I need help with!

Add them in the build ability

I tried but it doesn't have the option to warp in my custom building, the "Photon Defender". How do I add the option? It probably requires an actor.

    Hello,

I'm currently working on a custom map that requires that workers be able to build certain custom buildings that I have created. How is this done? Can someone please link me to a tutorial? (I can't find one.)

@DrSuperEvil: Go Thanks for the help but I found a working tutorial. I went through this and only found one error, which I'm currently working out with the tutorials creator. http://www.thehelper.net/threads/data-editor-a-vital-guide.151813/ I'll still seek you if I have any extra questions though. :P

Also, do you have Steam? I do really want to learn more about the Data editor but the other guy is always very busy, so if you have Steam, add me, it will make discussing the editor 10 times easier: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198019064513/

@DrSuperEvil: Go No offense at all but I found what you said.... Confusing.

I really just want to be able to make my own units, even if it takes hours of work, yet everywhere I look, the tutorial either doesn't work or is way to confusing for me to understand. I've tried so many tutorials now and all of them have failed! I've followed them step by step and double checking to make sure I did the step 100% correctly, yet it still fails! I also can't seem to find a tutorial that is up to date with the current patch.... This might explain why they keep failing...

I know this maybe hard for you but can you please find, or even make, a step by step tutorial for making units from scratch? I'm not saying the unit has to use a custom model, I'm find with a built in model.

This is all really fustrating me, I've spent hours in that blasted data editor trying to figure out what I did wrong! I've tried nearly every possible thing I can think of! Help please!

    @DrSuperEvil: Go Hm....

I see what you mean. How hard is it to create a unit from scratch? And how do you do it? Like, if I try and make a unit from scratch, I can't add things to it, it just won't let me. Is there some sort of blank unit base you can use? Can you please link me to a tutorial for this that works?

posted a message on [Need Help] Issues Creating a Custom Unit

    Hello,

I've been practicing at the Galaxy editor and I really want to get better at it. I decided to try and create a new unit/custom unit. After viewing several tutorials, I went ahead and managed to make a unit, but then I noticed a problem: the actor it was locked to, which was a custom made actor that was copied off another actor, was also locked to the original unit, despite being custom made. Sorry if that sounded confusing, basically, if I edit something in the actor for the custom unit, it also edits the actor(s) for the original unit it was modeled off.

Here are the steps I used to create my custom unit, please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it!:

    • 1 ) Went into the Data (F7).
    • 2 ) Went into the units tab.
    • 3 ) Right clicked and selected "Add Unit".
    • 4 ) Adjusted the unit's settings to look like this: http://i49.tinypic.com/34owso5.png Then I hit ok.
    • 5 ) Went over to the Actors tab and did "Add Actor".
    • 6 ) Adjusted the actor's settings to look like this: http://i49.tinypic.com/23rlul5.png Then I hit ok.
    • 7 ) Attached the actor I made to the "Fusion Hydralisk" I made, I did this by going into the actor and modifying the value to where a box (a thin one) came up in the top left hand corner with a drop down. In the drop down, I selected my "Fusion Hydralisk" and hit ok.
    • 8 ) Adjusted the units settings and such, basically, this was the part where I edited models, damage, range, health, ect.
    • 9 ) Tested the model, only to find that the original Hydralisk had the same abilities as the "Fusion Hydralisk" despite the two having custom actors and being two different units.

What am I doing wrong? How can I fix this?

    Quote from SoulFilcher: Go

@bjpiers123: GoWhat you described sounds like the bones. What about the textures? How are they handled? How many are applied to a model?

I'm pretty sure the textures come with the model, already textured on.

Also, if you want to try it yourself, go here and install this trial of the Spore Creature Creator: http://www.spore.com/trial/

When you get in the trial, just make a random creature and save it, then open the console and enter the cheat (I said how to in my last post.) I'm not sure if it will work in the trial though... It may not.

I would just send you one of my Spore .dae files but I'm not sure if that's legal if the person I'm sending it to doesn't own Spore.

    Quote from SoulFilcher: Go

@bjpiers123: Go It's possible and you only need the M3 addon for blender, made by PrintIn. I have a question, do these exported models come with bones already? That would make custom animations way easier.

I'm not sure if they come with bones (I'm no pro or anything) but apon opening one in Blender, it had these little arrow like things connected to each of its joints, I think those are for posing it because if you render it out, they go away.

Also, concerning copyright issues, I don't plan on publishing a map using it, I just want to see if it's possible for fun.

Also, these models are really cool because they are made in Spore; you create them. Here's a video (old video but still good) of some example creations you can make and then export using the console command "colladaexport" (you can bring up the console in-game Spore by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C ):
