posted a message on The Texture Shop (request icons and textures)

I may be in the wrong section but I was looking for help changing the avatar's of the units in the center bottom box. i.e. if you have a goliath selected in the center bottom there is a green 3d image of the unit. This image changes colors based on its damage. I would like to take that one step further and have the arm, back, legs, and front change color based on damage. So there could be a green front yellow left arm and red right arm.

I believe I would need the same image with the colors set for each scenario, but I do not know how to extract the image to change it, and then import it back.

    Any guidance?

posted a message on Model Questions

I am searching for some models to purchase and have several picked out but i know NOTHING about them... :( I have some questions if anyone would be kind enough to answer?

All the models I am looking at seem to be made for a SHOOTER more than a RTS game. They are quite large. Is it possible to scale them down in 3d MAX, or Galaxy to work with the Galaxy engine?

Example: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/madcat-max/492882 3D Model Specifications Product ID: 492882 Published: Oct 13, 2009 Geometry: Polygonal Polygons: 34,114 Vertices: 37,880 Textures: No Materials: No Rigged: Yes Animated: Yes UV Mapped: Unknown Unwrapped UVs: Unknown

If I wanted this model to become a unit about the size of the Goliath or Thor is that a possibility?

Blizzard doesn't technically take ownership. Typically, whoever makes the model would own it, or in this case you might as you're paying for it depending on a contract or whatever, but altogether ownership over things like this don't mean very much beyond reputation (i.e. stealing someone's models from a SC map and saying you made them or neglecting to give proper credit probably won't get you sued, but people might not like you).

Blizzard wouldn't really 'own' the map you make either. They would own assets IN the map (even if you don't use any of Blizzard's models or textures or anything, it's still developed with their engine so the backend remains to be their work, while most of the assets are your's or someone else's), and likewise would have some degree of control of it because of that. Over the map itself, not over the content (like the name, gameplay, etc). It can get more complicated if you want to get really far into it, but altogether it doesn't really matter. Even if you or someone else did steal a map or something and you wanted to take it to court, who are you going to sue? I mean Varine isn't my legal name, likewise I doubt looking for b8factor is going to get me far. It might, but it'll probably take a while.

Anyway, you should at least wait for the converter to be a little more stable. Maybe make a thread in the Third Party Tools section or post in the M3 thread (I think it's stickied) every once in a while. In the meantime, work on getting the rest of the map done to whatever point is possible. Then you'll know exactly what you need, and nothing will have to be modified later on.

Yup, that is what I am doing now. I am working on effects, map terrain, story mode, and just fiddling with ideas. I figured by the time the 2nd or even 3rd installment of their SP comes out there will be far more options, assets, supported what ever and want to be ready when it happens. Thanks for the input.

There aren't any tools without bugs released for conversion. Besides, converting between the other formats to Max isn't very hard, and it doesn't have anything to do with .obj (a horrid filetype by any account).

As for the first question, technically yes you could but it will likely not work very well and look bad, and have a lot of glitches. For the arms, yes, but it's again not recommended. All it would take is a trigger or whatever is used to sync them to fire late and it's fucked.

Smoke is done by particles, it's a separate object from whatever is falling and usually is scripted to appear after it or there is an emitter attached somewhere to the model.

Altogether you would be looking at paying more than the model is worth, I mean I would charge you more if it was clear I could, and at this point in time it's likely not even possible considering the various issues with the M3 exporter.

Thank, good to know these things.

I did not get what you were trying to say in the last item? Not worth, i suppose technically even a dollar would not be worth the price because Blizzard would retain ownership once it was published with the map, but as far as worth is concerned, I feel it is all relative to what the user wants. being 40 years old, loving to make mission maps as a hobby but having no artistic ability with graphics I do not feel some monies spent to obtain something to see my visions unfold to be a waste of money. :) But that is just me.

Map Ceiling Height with FOG of WAR and SOUND

I want to raise the ceiling just a bit from the standard Camera view. I have done this but find the FOG of WAR, and SOUND are not adjusted with this. I have not found much info on this, does anyone know if there is a way to get the FOG and SOUND to sync better with a higher ceiling?

I find when i ZOOM in the fog thickens at close range, do not understand this.

Sound is only audible when zoomed in and is super faint when zoomed out.

Speaking of sound, is there an overlay to show what diameter sound can be heard by other player when still in fog of war? Just curious.

Do I have to? It is actually not spam as each post is different question for different audience and for some in different section.

And it would make it easier to track, however less ppl would respond because I is to long.

I write posts while at work and send home and when have lunch I ask the questions.

posted a message on Jumping units

I successfully got a unit to jump to a location using the example of a post on using a missile with the units model and teleporting the original unit. This flickered a lot and did not work as smooth as the reaper works in game.

Questions, I noticed there is a JUMP actor why can I not use that and set the mover for the original unit? Isn’t that what the reaper does?

Another question, is it not possible to simply spawn a missile actor inside of the unit I want to jump and then attach the unit to the missile so it goes along for a ride and then unattached after it has landed?
