Felt the urge to to do some terraining based on some concept art from Star Citizen. Now I mostly went for getting the shapes right and more or less disregarded this place being junked up. Official description:

"The site of the first Vanduul attack against Humanity. Armitage had a growing population and pastures capable of agricultural development prior to the attacks. Now the planet is a wasteland of abandoned Human settlements and plains pockmarked by blast craters."

Wow, I was just getting nostalgic watching that, then came here to mapster to check out the current WTE and boom here I see you planning on making a new one, if that isn't some Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. By the way, I might be able to make some sort of new terrain for it, we'll see.

Some really interesting submissions. The three that really stood out in my mind were Nebuli, sgtnoobkilla, and Maxsvard:

    • sgtnoobkilla's terrain is hard to compliment. It is really the idea that jumps at you with his pictures, you know what he wants to accomplish. The pictures tell a very compelling story, the two view points excellent for this purpose. You know something is going on by looking at these pictures and you're interested. Lighting is also very good. Like I feel bad but the terrain itself, only thing good is the grassy hill and the soldier models upon it. You look to the town, road, other hill, and you're disappointed. Immediately drags you in, got you interested, but objectively, some interesting foliage work, good lighting work but not much else. Definitely got potential.
    • Maxsvard features a terrain which makes great use of the standard camera position which all the textures and doodads are made for, even though I know the inspiration I would still call it very unique. The ashes and blue particles are excellent additions, adding to a 'floaty' feeling. The textures have little going on for them, I do think you could have gotten away with some pretty serious texture work, textures are less busy than doodads. The background is abysmal. Having Zeratul in it might not have been the best decision, he could make it more apparent that this isn't its own universe, this is still Starcraft, the way he is facing straight forward is also a little strange. The cluttered mix of doodads looks good, but if you think of were your eyes are drawn, at least for me it's the little jungle cliff, then the junk mix higher up, those areas are great. If you think what makes them great, though, it is that cluttered beauty that's hard to describe. Anyway if you then look towards the crystal it looks out of place, it needed some smaller crystals, some blue shards and particles floating. Then of course you think how would a larger area with a crystal theme look, and the area Maxsvard used starts to feel a bit cramped... It is a terrain that leaves you wanting more, but also feeling more could've been done.
    • Nebuli's terrain has excellent lighting and crisp colours. The sun shining on the bridge is so good, but the rest of the bridge is a little dark IMO, I would have liked some more visible detail. The exterior pictures, they're good, but they don't tell you much of what kind of ship it is, no familiar shapes or objects. And the Umojan doodads are ridiculously white compared to the rest of the ship. In the interior laboratory picture there are only three models in focus against a blurred out background, don't get me wrong it works, but I would want to have more models in focus, you don't want the Blizzard modellers doing half your work. I realize the armoury picture is the same but the doodads are much more fit for purpose and they blend together better, so you know more thought have been put in. Overall though, these pictures are consistently pleasant to look at, simple, some minimalistic, the exterior ship pictures are a bit busier but it still isn't overdone.

It is for those reasons my vote goes to Umojan Research Ship, by Nebuli2.

posted a message on What's going on with everyone?

I'm studying my last year of upper secondary high, also known as gymnasium in some European countries. I will have studied 13 subjects total, with the focus being on biology, chemistry, physics, maths and English. I've also been in England and been host for an Englishman, both for one week. This summer I will most likely move away from my hometown to continue my studies somewhere else. Haven't figured out what yet, possibly either maybe computer or engineering related, because that really narrows it down...

My computer is having a bit of a spas and crashes when I try to run anything that is really taxing, so I've been playing LoL and Hearthstone because those games can actually run on this machine. Other things I'm doing on my free time is taking my driving license, being on the internet, reading this really interesting book about aliens, reading A song of Ice and Fire, and thinking a lot about fictional gameworlds.

    HEARTHSTOOONE!

Yeah, I've... I've played it. I haven't been bothered by pay-to-win it might be because It's not shown whether someone is a paying player, or because I only play arena or that it's their only current monetization strategy. I've gotten increasingly frustrated with pre-built though, balance issues of course but in the sense that you don't get matched with someone of an equal deck and no real motivator I only play it to get gold for arena runs. I mean if you get over 3/3 when playing arena every time there's no point in buying boosters.

    And have some suggestions:

    • Card testing against a very fast AI, set cards and mana yourself, pause menu have your deck so you make adjustments etc.
    • Card trading through a betting system, you bet cards you don't want and if you win you can get cards you do want. Entirely with player submitted cards. Either with arena-style draft or your pre-built decks.

Yeah, its camouflage is pretty good but it breaks the shapes up a little too much, more varied textures would help for example differentiating the inside of the mouth. I was also a bit limited by only being able to rotate it +/- 90 deg. 'Animating' it in any way would be too time consuming, but I would have loved it to have some other poses.

The last picture is actually a pretty good guide to spotting it now that I think about it.
