My guess is something that I described in this thread:

    http://forums.sc2mapster.com/development/terrain/17839-ceilings/

Which involves flipping (using Site Operation's) a unit that is using a doodad model.

Another way would be to use custom models but I am pretty sure they did the flip method and just have really dark lighting to coverup any odd details, which just happens to add to their dark atmosphere.

Yeah my join date was in November, and yet I have more posts than you and have actually helped people on these forums. What have you done? Insulted people? Good job, feel big.

And what does a join date have to do with knowledge, opinions, or anything for that matter?

Sounds to me like you're the imbecile who can't even make one solid point about anything.

So keep on trucking big man, see if I care.

Yeah thanks, it's not hard. Put two slashes in front of your text for italic text. Pretty genius, eh?

    Quote from Koronis: Go

What do you do when you have no idea of what you're talking about? You shut the f up.

Thanks for the cheap shot. You know what? Most of what I said is my opinion and a few facts. I do know what I am talking about. I've played games and bought games, for a very very long time. Doesn't make me an expert though but I never claimed to be one. Good job attacking my opinions instead of actually making any decent points though.

And just because a company plans to do something doesn't mean they have to. They could scrap the marketplace. They have absolutely no LEGAL oblication to do anything. Once you buy the game, you agree to THEIR terms. You know, that button you click when you agree to their terms in order to install the game. You bought the game AS IS.

And if you bought SC2 only for the marketplace, then maybe you should make your own game from scratch instead of using a FREE editor to make a profit.

    Quote from Koronis: Go

Do you even know that there will be a marketplace for modders to sell their maps once the expansion is released? At one point, when they were advertising SC2, it was almost clear they were releasing it with wings of liberty.

Why, yes I did know that it was planned. But please, refer to the commercial or press release where this was announced as an official part of the game, I would love to be corrected but I am pretty sure there was no advertising of the map marketplace and it just referenced to as PLANNED.

    Quote from s3rius: Go

Well, gotta disagree with that. For Sc2 the Editor is no bonus anymore.
They actively advertised the editor and it's features as a selling
point. Makes it part of the package, imo.

I don't recall seeing any commercials where they advertise, specifically, the Editor. Yes I am sure in interviews they make various statements about it and the features, etc. But I would definitely say it was not a huge selling point. I mean, come on, it's Starcraft, and it's Blizzard. Sold right there.

Just look at the Diablo series. It has no editor and yet it sells, and Diablo 3 will sell big time. With absolutely no editor.

Really though, what's the percentage of consumers that are actually interested in the Editor? Probably not as high as you think. Compare how many copies SC2 sold to the amount of users in this forum for example, or even compare it to the number of active SC2 players on Bnet...

That's not to say the Editor has nothing to do with some sales. It definitely is a feature of all their RTS now. It's something that we have come used to having. If they were to just take it away, there would be an outbreak, because simply put, that's just part of Blizzard's RTS games from WC2 onward. A lot of people who still play SC2 after campaign stay because of the Editor and custom maps. You would still buy it if there wasn't, let's be honest, how many games do you buy, play them once and then never play again? Look at console games, now thats a ripoff.

Basically my point was we should be thankful for anything we get. They really shouldn't even support their Editor, it really should just be a bonus. But they are choosing to help us out. Granted, slowly, but for free. Starcraft is mostly a eSport game now so the fact they are putting any effort into the Editor should be enough for anyone who bought the game, a game which could sell just for the name, single player, and melee (eSport) alone.

But there are a lot of points in the OP's post that I do agree with. Such as Battle.net feeling humanless and boring. But I think Patch 1.3 is a step in the right direction and hopefully by the expansion a lot of these problems will be fixed and forgotten.

Oh and Blizzard Allstars will come, and no, Blizzard would never ban maps for that reason. :P That's not to say they won't feature their own maps, of course. Haha.

& until Blizzard starts charging extra for their games with Editor's included, then I would consider it a bonus.

I never played the multi-player melee games much, but really enjoyed the campaign. I haven't failed to realize that at all. My point was that without the mods the game wouldn't have sold as many copies and had as much activity online as it did.

Without mods you would have no DotA. Without DotA, would it have been as successful? Definitely not.

There was no DotA when the game released and therefore it had no affect on sales. People bought it for the continued awesomeness from WC2 and it was the next best thing from SC for SC fans. It had an awesome storyline and with the announcement of World of Warcraft shortly after, that's probably what gave it it's extra boost of sales, not DoTA.

Warcraft 3 had Tower Defense, and it's way bigger than DoTA I would say. It's in Apps for phones, websites, flash games, etc. If anything gave WC3 life, it was Tower Defenses which were there in beta and release. They were highly played before and even after DoTA. And it was probably the first decent thing that was made in SC2.

Just thought I would point out that DoTA or mods in general had nothing to do with sales for WC3, especially intial sales. And anyone who bought WC3 after initial sales, usually had no idea of DoTA until after already buying it, unless specifically refered from a friend. & They probably bought it for the story because of WoW.

Also, mods (custom maps) were a bonus, ever since WC2. It has been a bonus to be able to make custom maps. It's not something that comes with every game, an editor which allows anyone to easily learn and make a custom map/mod using their engine. I am not saying it didn't help sales, especially after SC1, it was expected to have an editor. But that's not the reason WC3 sold, I am sure it helped out but as for the main reason, no, that had nothing to do with it. People would of bought it anyways even without an editor.

    Anyway's carry on.

posted a message on Terrain Raise

Alright, I fiddled with this for a few minutes and came up with the solution.

The key lies in the Footprint and the Radius of the Unit.

Attached is a picture showing it working, and another showing the Data Fields you need to put to get it to work.

Just note, by removing the footprint it allows units to walk through the building (up to the radius). If you increase the radius then the Terrain-forming will increase to the radius as well. 2.5 is the default for command center, if you decrease it then the Terrain-forming also decreases, but the Footprint also has to be removed or else you will see no affect.

Possible work arounds would be using doodad pathing blockers around the building or triggers so when a unit comes close to buildings it will prevent them from moving into it (move instantly offset -1.0).

If you are allowing units to build buildings and such then triggers would be your best bet. I would use triggers either way but that's my preference.

    _______

    Steps:

    - Go inside the Data Editor
    - Go to Data Type: Units
    - Find the structure you want to edit (Example: Command Center)
    - Set the Unit's Movement - Pathing Footprint to: None
    - Set the Unit's Movement - Radius to: 0

posted a message on A word on bank encryption

    @OneTwoSC: Go

Blizzard encrypted their installer with a code that's not generated by any means and the only way to get that code was to connect to their website to get it directly from Blizzard. Their website wouldn't release the code until the game was released.

The reason this worked was because people only had a week to try and brute force (randomly generate) the key... Which was a pretty long key so it could take quite a while to do. By the time someone could of done it, the game would be released so it was pointless to work on brute forcing it. I also believe they had a different key for each Battle.net region.

It just wasn't worth the effort with only a week. I am sure some tried but didn't even come close to getting the right key in only a week...

It could work for banks but seems like more work then it's worth. Each map would need it's own code for one. But if bank signatures work properly then I wouldn't expect anything more for it.

Now what they could do is have space (MB's) on each Battle.net account just for banks, so the bank files are uploaded to Battle.net instead of locally and loaded from the person's Battle.net account instead of locally. Might be more work then they are willing to do as well though.

posted a message on Fixing ugly terrain/skybox transition

I think the only skyboxes that have a bottom half are the stars/planets ones like Char.

Players shouldn't see this transition in a default camera position.
Use camera bounds and such to prevent players from seeing the edges of the map.

Use cliffs or doodads around the edges to create a feeling of a world and not just a square. And you can make cliffs around the edges to hide the transition as well. I suggest adding more map space and doing that if you are using a third person camera.

    - or you could make your own skybox...
