The WoW Model Viewer has been updated to support the new CASC system. Note that it's still in Alpha and very buggy. I could only get a few models to show up at this point when I tested it out.
It's good to start simple and build from there. Make basic things in your map in each area (ex: make a basic terrain layout, make a new unit, make a trigger to spawn your unit, etc.). Don't try doing everything at once, especially when you are new. You will learn how to do things better as time goes on and you will want to change things around as you build your map. Starting a map can be daunting but once you learn the basics you can do almost anything you want!
If they have the map unlocked you can just find it in the editor and download it. If on the other hand they locked the map (which seems likely considering the things you said) it can be obtained but it is unethical to do so. If that is the case, you should just make your own variation of Custom Hero Defense from scratch. Perhaps you can improve upon it and personalize it to your taste.
Do you mean a custom map you are working on or from someone else? If you try to open a map made by someone else and they set the game to locked you will be unable to open it.
I noticed that when I made text tags with just the number '1' it wouldn't show up. I got around it by just adding a space before and after the number. Seems like an odd bug. It only happens with text tags and only if I have '1' by itself.
Like GlornII said you are probably linking the sound to the damage effect instead of the search area effect of your ability. If you have it setup correctly and it still isn't working then go into actor events and do the following:
Effect.(Your Search Area Effect For The Ability).Start
(Add Term) At Effect
Create
(The middle part is the term (At) then scroll down the list to the Effect option)
I am sure there is a limit but it can handle at least thousands if not more. Since Data doesn't take much space I wouldn't be surprised if the limitation is only from hitting the map size limit. Note that when you have a lot of Data though the editor will lag quite a bit.
I hope you guys don't abandon this project so far along. If you stop work all together you will never go back to it. Just a few hours a week is all you need to keep the project going.
It's really well done. Definitely good enough to be a winner. The only reason I think it may not have been picked was because of the length. I remember Blizzard put in the rules a rather short limit on the movie length (I think 3 minutes?).

A Blizzard made model viewer and exporter for CASC's similar to the WoW Model Viewer would be very convenient.

I never got into the Team Fortress games but this look it is pushing the Strategic FPS genre in the right direction. Looks fun!
