I would just do WiFi only, and 16GB only. Let me give u my reasoning:

    - No File System in iPad. You cannot copy paste file. So no point of buying bigger capacity unless you are apps whore who downloads thousands of apps, music, movies... Unlikely for most imo. Music you only need to create playlist of 100 favorite songs. Movies live HD streaming nowadays. Apps, only plenty are high quality. 16GB is enough imo

    - Adding 3G = adding $150 to the device cost, and adding $240-480 annual cost by subscribing data plan to network provider. Is it worth it? I don't think so. Most likely you are using an iPad in a place where you can sit down, and most likely those places have WiFi, i.e. office, Starbucks, home all have WiFi. Also 3G is freaking slow!!

    - You most likely already have smartphones with 3G data plan. You can make that phones a WiFi hotspot. No need to pay additional $240-480 per year imo.

    - Definitely books, magazine, newspaper, e-news replacement.

    - Early morning web browsing device (very useful for situations like when you just wake up in the morning and don't feel like moving your body too much)

    - Casual to mid-core gaming console (i.e.infinity blade)

    - Note-taking tools (but not drawing pad)

    - Watch movies on car, planes.

    - Strong 11 hour battery life (Nobody even come close to this battery power).

    - Facetime with your long-distanced girlfriend before bed! Hey trust me, facetime while laying on your bed is much much more intimate and enjoyable!

    - The most touch-responsive device yet! Motorola Xoom is not even close. Well, as you know, Android is lagging behind in terms of responsiveness...

    - Faster CPU clock processor than Xoom. iPad is A5, which is 1.2GHz dual core. Xoom is only 1GHz dual core. Not sure about graphics tho.

    - Very cheap for $499. Nobody can even come close to this price. Nobody. All you need is 16GB WiFi model. Don't buy anything else other than 16GB WiFi. The rest of the models are ripoff! SCAM. S-C-A-M. 16GB WiFi model is the best

    - Oh don't forget the 12 month interest free financing! $499 / 12 is basically you're paying $45 a month. No interest!

Nothing to be optimistic about really. Just sharing some story. But making maps, especially ambitious one, is verrryyy fun, oh especially doing it with friends too. Make sure you don't spend all your life betting on it. 1-2 hours a day before bed is pretty healthy imo.

posted a message on Blizzard Regrets not Launching SC2 with a Marketplace

He [Frank Pearce] adds that Blizzard missed an opportunity to help grow the hub last year by releasing “Starcraft II” without a marketplace component, which would have allowed users to share self-made add-ons and modifications. It’s something he would still like to add, but with the teams tied up working on new titles, it’s not going to happen soon, he concedes.

“One of the things about gamers is they’re really passionate and they consume content so quickly,” he says. “[World of Warcraft] Cataclysm took us two years to make - and many of them burned through that in two weeks...You can leverage the community to create awesome content for others to consume. All of a sudden there’s the possibility to have all of this that awesome content available... I regret not launching ‘Starcraft II’ with a marketplace.”

lol...thats crazy :D Who takes the time to do that? I bet it wasnt as easy as in the movie. :D

National Geographic Team lolz. Well, it doesn't take too many people to do that really if the design and planning is right. In fact they did it in less than a day. Even in the movie, Mr Fredricksen did it in a day.

Beautiful! Beautiful.... I fall down on my knees and cry now... very beautiful!

Seriously, put price tag on your map please. I'll pay for this kind of dedicated project. Stop listening to those cheap bastard who only want stuff for free. Put 99c at least if you ever release it!

Thanks TheZizz for the link (vital for bigbrother huggers who don't go out to look for info themselves ; and yes it is to be taken in context AND out, the truncated version once again makes people look for less then there actually is, however I still thank Xhatix for the op, besides his avatar is awesome)

The beauty of it is that people don't want to pay extra, so why would they... start talking about efame guys, cause the market place is:

    1/useless

2/morally/ethically wrong (Vexal:"I feel like charging for my map would be a slap in the face to all the loyal players. Especially since they've essentially been post-release beta testers." +100)

    3/completely un implementable...

1/mapmakers want recognition of their work (anyone wanting more: gotto 4/)

2/why would players have to pay? Because other shitty games cost money... lolrolffacepalm . zip (60 bucks and internet constant connection... ring a bell)

3/the creators would have to be vetted, the creators would have to sign contracts with blizz (ever thought of the average age of the mapmaker???), creators would have to graciously work their asses off to "implement" every single patch sc2 requires into their mod (imagine the shittload of maintenance), not to mention galaxy... a gamer would not buy a game but a temp game (one that will not be updated per say, when taken into a "marketplace" point of discussion), finally so much hassle while the community does it already for free (just have to "moderate" the content (mods and maps, bratchannels and .. the forums..., this costs, whether you think so or not, many a shinning coin)...

Don't get me started on the "how one would go about getting their mod online" (lol original models and 2gig cap.. yes it is a gig (the danse)... it's utterly impossible without SEVERAL copies... sounds.. terrain... you name it.. it's a quick math work, do it for your own educative purposes)

4/e fame (or as i like to call it pre professional recognition) is the only good objective... you thing world of starcraft ryan is in dire need to look for a job?

malu05's work. Project Vektor, AK130ruins deserves some recognition. And I mean REAL recognition. more than just "great job malu05! now fuck off and let me play your game for free! Oh there's bugs here and there FIX IT GODDAMN IT"

And if you think AK130ruins or Project Vektor is "so easy to make it should be free", I challenge you to make it just as polished as malu05's version! then publish it online for free so all of us can play ASAP without waiting for malu05 to finish making it!

Go ahead buy Call of Duty for $40 im sure by now. or you can pay $0.99 or so at marketplace to play the portion of AK130. Sure if you already have CoD, you don't have to buy, you don't have to pay. Let others who want to play pay!

@houndofbaskerville: If all people are like you in this world, I'm sure many developers/modders will be jobless, broke, and die of hunger.

I really diguise people wanting everything for free really. They don't understand a thing. I used to want everything for free too back then. But since I started working as developer, I value the hard-work of all the developers. But but but..Google is free... DUMBASS! Google can give stuff for free cos they have advertisers paying them for diplay and click ads! and that's the sole reason.

Do you know why eSport StarCraft only takes off in Korea? Because pro players are honored in South Korea, unlike in USA. The price pool per month is up to US$500,000. While in USA the price pool is only $25,000 ahahah fekin' lame. That's why 3 TV broadcasts StarCraft Brood War. And that's why all pro players from EU, US go to South Korea to compete. For the fame, competitiveness, and (don't forget) money! That's exactly why! Now, recenly, MLG announced, they will have price pool of $200,000 for StarCraft 2, and Boomm!! EG.IdrA decided to go back to his home country. Why? Because the price pool is worth it. It values him as a US pro gamer!!

Hate it or not: Money makes everything goes around. As long as you don't be greedy, a little bit of money incentives is VERY GOOD, VERY HEALTHY for the industry, for the community.

Oh and don't forget Joker: If you're good at something why do it for free?

@houndofbaskerville sorry if I sound like I know anything about you. I just totally disagree with all you said above. Sounded very pessimistic and very cheap. I totally disagree

Meh the sad thing is most of our maps are better than 99 cent+ iphone apps. But yeah we do have to thank blizz for the art assets being a large part of it.

Except Angry Birds. The best mobile Apps out there really. 99c for about 250 levels, and they keep updating it with new content every few months. Total of almost 300 levels to date.

You got a point there. What you can do is donate 50% of the yield to charity or so. Just like how Blizzard did to their WoW pet. And I am pretty sure your fans are willing to chip in if the price is something like 99c or so.

Look at Farmville, Frontierville, Cityville, Restaurant City, Mafia Wars. Basically all social games. In 2010, Zynga got $400M from 200M user base. Thats $1Million+ per day. That's Madness! If users are willing to spend that much, why won't they spend 99c, with 50c going to charity, and 49 cents for tributes to the mapmakers. I think charging small amount makes sense.

Vex, if that is the case, then we definitely need more space to host complete mods.

Exactly. Need at least 100MB for all the animation and model. Could be much more. And it might take years before we see something qualified as premium map if thats the case.
